opportunities and publicity by politicians posing with a Swedish 16-year-old purporting to be some sort of expert on the matter. RaM never wanting to miss an opportunity to sit down somewhere and make themselves a bloody nuisance also decide that the best way to resolve the matter is to cause mayhem and fi nancial loss to others. Is GW a threat to our industry? Is it a threat to mankind? I am not qualifi ed to say and there are experts who cannot agree but it does appear that the Tuna fi shing is presenting new opportunities off of our Southern coasts… see I told you I was the optimist.

Now here is a very contentious one and I can already see Simon reaching for his pen! That this substance has poisonous properties is not debatable and it has been banned and restricted in use in various areas of the world. What we do not know

is how much leeches and causes harm and to what degree and what percentage of its use is in fi shing. The ATA position on this is that we shall work with the appropriate authorities and encourage our members to abide by government guidelines and law. Certainly banning the substance will give tremendous diffi culties to a number of industry players and no doubt will lead to a very large black market of sea leads in particular with all the inherent dangers of that.
CHILDREN UNINTERESTED This may be our biggest problem but one that we may all be able to have more infl uence upon. There is no doubt that young people today have so many opportunities and things to fi ll their time and fi shing does not rate highly on the
“cool” list of things to do. What has been shown is that where youngsters are introduced it can be very successful and this is probably epitomised by the excellent work of Fishing for Schools led by Charles Jardine. More work in this area working with manufacturers and retailers together on a local and national basis must be the way to move forward. The positive way to look at all these problems is that they present opportunities for replacement, development and innovation. There are many other things of course such as over fi shing and EU rules and I would like you to tell me what concerns you have that we as a trade body body representing you should address. Finally, without members we
are nothing so please join us. If you contact me I shall send a membership pack to you.
