Sonik moves to another level with reel design

Tournos XD

Sonik takes on Japanese reel brands as its new Big Pit offering packs a real sales punch – you get a lot for your money with this one!

reating a foothold in the UK reel market is no easy task – it’s a market dominated by the Japanese giants and many brands have tried and largely failed at securing brand positioning. One brand that has found success however, is Sonik. When the company initially launched the Tournos 8000 Big Pit reel back in 2014, it gained immediate popularity due to the cool ‘all back’ cosmetics and solid functionality. Smooth line lay and strong reliable gearing, twin line clips, manual bail arm and a ‘Quick-Torque drag system meant the reel gained a strong following and paved the way for the release of a larger 10000 size in 2015. One year later Sonik added the hugely popular VaderX and DominatorX reels which have gained significant market share in the £50 and £80 price brackets respectively. In 2019, Sonik have upgraded the original Tournos 10000 reel to the

new Tournos 10000 XD. With an RRP of £149.99 the reel is designed to withstand all that comes with distance fishing, incorporating 14+1 stainless shielded bearings, a dual- strength stainless steel main shaft, high-strength carbon composite body and rotor. In July, a new Tournos 8000 XD size reel will also be available, as a standard size carp reel suitable for everything except extreme distances. James Temple, product manager for Sonik, told T&G: “The original Tournos reels were a huge hit for us winning favour with thousands of anglers all over the world, but the upgrade to the new Tournos XD versions takes things to another level.” “With a longer coned spool and a super slow oscillation gearing, the line lay is perfect and will enable longer distances to be cast time after time. In addition, the new reels feature a ‘Quick-Clik’ folding handle, which

makes it possible to position your rods close together on a pod, or alternatively, makes it quick and easy to pack away into a holdall at the end of your session.” “With a barrel shaped wooden handle, smart ventilation slots machined into the spool, improved twin line clips and all the usual solid features from the original engineered into the reel, it will continue to provide many years of trouble free performance.” James continued: “I think over the past few years we’ve proved to the market that we can compete with any brand in terms of reel quality, features, design and price. The XD is a small step up in terms of price – but in terms of performance and value for money, it’s a real winner.”
