he Angling Trades Association, revitalised under the leadership of new CEO, John Loftus, has arranged a Think Tank session with marketing expert Catherine Pybus to come up with ideas to save the industry. “Angler numbers have reached crisis point,” says John, “and if we don’t act immediately we really do run the risk of there being nothing left.” John was speaking at the latest Angling Trades Association meeting, held near Birmingham. The date and venue for the new

Think Tank will be announced shortly, but it is anticipated it will take place in August. The Think Tank will utilise some of the best and most creative minds in the industry – the idea being to get them all under one roof for the day under the direction of Catherine Pybus. Catherine has worked with some of the biggest brands in the world, including award winning campaigns with Volkswagen, Unilever and Diagio. Catherine said: “We need to Get Britain Fishing again. Ideally we need 40 or 50 of the industry’s brightest thinkers all together in one room where we can distill ideas and come up with a clear and concise pathway ahead.” John continued: “There are some amazing brains in this industry, and currently they all work for their
respective companies and do what they do – but the idea here is to bring them all together and harness their power to create ideas that we can use to market angling as a sport – and bring new blood into this industry.” Darryl Hodges, marketing manager for Dynamite Baits, and a new recruit to the ATA, told T&G: “We can all see that there are less and less anglers on the bank and the time for talking about it has to stop. It’s time to all pull together in the right direction and turn this tide and I think that this is as good a starting point as we could wish for.” Peter Aske of Go Outdoors, also in attendance at the meeting, added: “It’s important that we develop a plan to deliver a message to the millions of potential anglers out there. We need to build a market place that’s growing, not receding, and we have to do this fast.” John continued: “I’ve a completely open mind on this – but if you think you can help and would like to be part of this Think Tank, please get in touch. The more people involved, the greater the chance of coming up with those winning ideas that will help drive business for all of us in the future. “We cannot afford time to drag on this as we really need a strong plan in place as soon as possible. Then the diffi cult job of funding it can take place.” Think you’ve got something to bring to the party? Want to be part of this exciting Think Tank? If so, John would love to hear from you!
