NEWS
The new licences are confusing. For example shooters have to prove there’s crop damage. Then they have to have tried to scare birds off – with blank fi rers, gas guns, fl ags – any non- lethal means… and they can only shoot where crop damage is appearing. You can understand why people are being put off.
spending £100k with the trade. But I’ve not spent a penny this month. The trade could bleed out from this. It will take a few months for the real implications to show.”
T&G spoke with Eley
Hawk’s David Thompson to fi nd out more about cartridge sales. He told us: “We’re seeing a 50 per cent sales drop in pigeon cartridge and we expect to

We urge everyone to be law abiding, and consult with BASC who seem to have the most up-to-date information. “Given the situation is completely uncertain politically we as an industry need to anticipate that this uncertainty could continue for a while.” And with the Government distracted trying to fi nd a new prime minister, this distraction could run on for a few months yet.” But is it all doom and gloom for the trade? Are there positives to be taken from this?
Charles Bull at Just Cartridges has seen no downturn in his business – and he does sell a lot of cartridges. He told us: “Sales where they should be for us at this time of year and I can’t say there has been a real impact for us. I am not duly worried about the situation. July

is where sales should really pick up.” And David Florent of the Oxford Gun Company and Shooting School has seen an increase in business. David said: “We’ve certainly not seen any difference and if anything we’re seeing more people shooting clays. Whether that’s out of frustration that they can’t get out and shoot the birds they want, I’m not sure. But it’s certainly not made a difference in our business.” Meanwhile T&G understands that sales of blank fi rers across the country are on the up as shooters look to cover themselves from caveats in the new licences. Every cloud, huh?
