Measom Freer’s history M

easom Freer & Co was founded in 1937 by Gordon and Eve

Freer setting up their office in High Street, Leicester. By the early 1940’s they had moved to Regent Street and were involved in the early forming and pressings of plastics and by the late 1940’s having moved again to St Margaret’s Street became one of the pioneers, processing plastics by injection moulding. Buttons and trimmings for the fashion and clothing trade occupied most of the business. When more space was required in the 1950’s all manufacturing was moved to a modern factory in Saffron Lane, Leicester. Injection moulding facilities were expanded considerably, manufacturing for motor trade, electricals, household goods, and the firm became an innovator, being the first company in the country to produce plastic shoe heels. The Saffron Lane factory was extended to its maximum capacity and when this was insufficient a further move in 1958 to premises in Pullman Road, Wigston was required. More injection moulding machines

were purchased expanding the business into more household goods, coil formers and intricate parts for the electrical trade, cocktail sticks, marking tags, parts for typewriters, steel marking stamp boxes, toiletries and many others. By the early 1960’s purchasing and procuring injection moulds and other engineering parts

was a major part of the business and when more control was required its own subsidiary toolmaking company was set up. By the late 1960’s the company expanded into blow moulding producing bottles for cosmetics, toiletries, pharmaceutical and many other industries, as well as technical mouldings such as bellows.

By the 1970’s as tooling costs were becoming more of an issue for trade customers the design department expanded and improved the range of standard products immediately available from stock. In 1995 all production was moved to Chartwell Drive in Wigston whilst Pullman Road retained as a warehouse for stock products. Later in the 1990’s a further unit in Chartwell Drive was purchased to bring all warehousing on-site. Into the 2000’s the firm is still owned and run as a family business by the 3rd generation of the Freer family.
