Feature DUO

A philosophy like no other It doesn’t takemuch to create a fishing lure these days – practically anyone can do it. It is

for precisely that reason that you should seek those lure creatorswho do things thoroughly, with passion and genuine handcraft. That is theway of things at DUO.

S

ince its inception over 20 years ago, Japanese lure brand DUO has forged a standard in luremanufacturing utilising

themost advanced technologies and innovation available to it. A company beyond its time, DUO has

matched its incredibly advanced processing technologies with an unmatched attention to detail and precise execution that it believes exceeds all others. The personification of the DUO philosophy is

its CEO and chief designerMasahiro Adachi, one of themost respected lure designers in Japan. His designs were first introduced in the early

1990s when he shocked the lure world with his engineering. His designing process originates fromthought but his understanding of lure action developed fromstudying the intricate

swimbehaviour of live baitfish.Another vital element toMr Adachi’s gift is his detailed understanding of predator fish and their biology. His philosophy of ‘functional beauty’means he is trying to create lures that both unify in form and function, making lures that are creatively known as ‘better than the real one’. The real thing that sets DUO andMasahiro

apart is that he does not create lures in the traditional way that is used in the Japanese domesticmarket, using drawings and computer- aided design (CAD). Every DUO creation begins as a carving. He

mentally envisions the swimaction of his lure and begins carving a design fromABS plastic – the process could be considered organic. Masahiro’s designs are original, sometimes so intricate that they requiremonths to perfect

– a source of occasional frustration fromhis manufacturing team. However, the integration of hand-created

designs and high-precision digital constructs are imperative priorities for the creator and hemaintains this approach will remain a trademark for DUO lures. “DUO stands for form. DUO stands for

function. Formand function aligned in perfect harmony,” explains DUO’s exportmanager, Martin Bakos. “DUO stands for the highest quality, the

Nippon quality. The absolute commitment to the highest quality to the level of DUO is unseen in this industry. “Through the technologicalmerging of

different aspects,we have pursued the leading technology ofmoulding for lure development.”

Eventually the designs are turned into plastic moulds.

Production of the master mould for a DUO lure avoids computers.
