Rod Hutchinson acquired by Donald Cooke
Iconic British fi shing tackle brand Rod Hutchinson is looking forward to continued growth after it was acquired by fellow UK company Donald Cooke Ltd. Following a couple of
turbulent years for the brand under its previous ownership, the new owners are promising stability and reliable service for its network of retailers. Donald Cooke is a fifth-
generation business with its foundations in the pet and fish food supply sector. However, in recent years it has made inroads into angling with the ownership of Whizzo groundbaits and the UK distribution of German-made Stroft fishing lines. Te company’s boss,
Andrew Cooke, believes Rod Hutchinson is well placed to build itself back into a
household name in the angling industry. He said: “We have been
servicing independent retailers for decades and we are fully in touch with their wants and needs, so we know what we have to deliver to make them successful. “While we can now see the
influx of chains in the tackle market it is still dominated by smaller guys and, like the pet
market, there will still be room for independents in the future,” Andrew confidentially predicts. “It’s all about offering good
products at a good price, and at a time when the retailer wants it, and that is what we aim to achieve. “Te next year is all about stabilising things and gaining the trust of the
retailer.Come 2017 we shall start to look at product development with a view to 2018. Te important thing for us now is to work as closely as we can with dealers and bring the skills and work practices that we have built over 50 years as a wholesaler and deliver those to the tackle trade.” Well-known fishing industry
marketer and man behind Rod Hutchinson’s original revival, Pete Chandler, will assist Andrew and the Cooke team.

Kayaks have become a significant part of the fishing industry.
A new trade show specifi cally for paddlesports, canoes and kayaks is being launched in the United States off the back of the move of dates by the Outdoor Retailer (OR) Summer Market trade show. The new show, Paddlesports
Retailer, will debut on September 12th to 14th in Madison, Wisconsin, and has been described as a show‘for paddlers,
by paddlers’. Traditionally, canoe and kayak companies had exhibited at the OR Summer Market trade show in the first week of August, but this will now take place in June, which is right in the middle of peak season for paddle retailers. “After hearing that OR was
moving to June, it became clear this meant the end of
paddlesports in Salt Lake City. There’s just no way vendors or retailers can leave their factories and shops in peak season,” says Darren Bush, owner of Rutabaga Paddlesports and organiser of the world’s leading consumer paddling show, Canoecopia. For more information on
the new show, visit www.
