Shimano USA launches youth fishing program
Shimano North America has kicked off its latest youth program designed to get kids more involved in fishing. The company’s vice president,
Steve Ferrara, explained that the program is designed to introduce high school and college-aged anglers to fishing on Shimano tackle to “help them have more fishing success, create lifetime relationships even beyond their time on the water, and open their eyes and teach young anglers about the sustainable use of the resource.”
Shimano youth fishing
coordinator Frank Hyla, who has been active in the high school bass fishing scene in Illinois since its inception in 2008, will lead Shimano’s efforts. In laying the groundwork
for Shimano’s program, Hyla has attended more than 200 tournaments and youth fishing group meetings over this past year to both talk about Shimano and its tackle and advocacy efforts. “Through Frank and our
team’s efforts, we have designed
our high school and college angling program to be much more than simply having these student anglers using our tackle,” said Steve. “Our plans include not only
helping them pursue their passion for competitive fishing, but also to guide and mentor them as they navigate their way to potential careers in the sportfishing, outdoors or natural resources fields.” For more information on the
program contact Frank Hyla on

AUSTRALIA TO FIGHT COMMERCIAL NETTING
The recreational fishing industry in Australia has vowed to fight commercial netting in waters around ‘major population centres’. Allan Hansard, chief executive
of the Australian Fishing Trade Association (AFTA) has also said that the recreational fishing industry will use political power to push for a greater share of resources in all Australian states.

fishers are against commercial fishers,” Alan said. “We need to share the resource – the word needs to be ‘share’ and that doesn’t mean that commercial fishers net the whole area and leave no fish for the recreational fishers. “There is a place for net
fishing but it’s not where there is a high population of people that share the waters with them.”
