News Investigation USA ELECTION

One absolutely key factor in

all this is the environment – a subject where Trump did not score highly among voters of all political persuasions. Patagonia’s global sales

manager for the fishing division,Mark Harbaugh, made his fears clearly understood when TTWasked if he thought Trump would be good or bad for the fishing industry: “Bad.His views on the state of the environment are a joke.” While Trump wants to keep

public lands in control of the federal government, which is probably good for fishing, he has some other, rather glaring oversights. The first of which is that he doesn’t accept scientific evidence that climate change is real.Despite 2016 going down as the hottest year on record globally (the third consecutive year this has happened),Trump has remained firmon this view.He has also voiced plans to dismantle the Paris Climate Agreement. One thing is clear in fishing,

climate change is already having a big

effect.A reluctance to act or help with these issues could wind up being a terrible thing in the long run for the fishing industry. Ben Furimsky concurs

that: “The fact Trump doesn’t believe in global warming is a serious concern.” What happens on this front

remains to be seen. But in the short term, regarding issues such as the economy and litigious issues, Ben – along withmany others – believe the fishing industry can look after itself pretty well. He concludes: “The fishing

tackle industry is capable of creating its own destiny as long as the fish and environment that they live in is protected and access is maintained. There are times when it takesmore work than normal and investing into the future of the industry is a priority. We will have to put our efforts towards creating the best scenario that we can and prevent anything that could damage our industry. Let’s hope that the fishing tackle industry and the environment it depends on is not something Trump is willing to sacrifice.”
