Coca-Cola rPet increase could raise UK plastic recycling rates

COCA-COLA is set to increase recycling of plastic from 40% by 2020 up to 50%.

The increase comes after environmentalists claimed the company is not doing enough to stop plastic pollution.

Coca-Cola’s UK and Europe branch currently targeted the increase of recycled plastic or rPet (recycled plastic) in their bottles to 40% by 2020 - with a move to raise this to 50%.

This move comes after industry insiders say the government must do more in-country raw plastic recycling, after China has driven a decade-long explosion of commodity prices – including plastics – from the 2000s to present day.

This proposal by Coke puts the UK at an advantage to recycle the raw plastic materials, as Lincolnshire is home to Europe’s largest and most advanced rPet manufacturer, Clean Tech.

Coca-Cola is competing with other brands to be fi rst to announce it was making dramatic changes to its packaging, to use more recycled plastic and recycle more of their bottles.

But compared to other big brand drink companies, Coca-Cola is behind its competitors, which are already at 50% and aim to be at 100% by 2020.

John Sauven, Head of Greenpeace, feels Coca Cola’s proposal of 50% by 2020 is not an ambitious target, considering the world’s biggest drink brand produces 100 billion single-use bottles every year.
