GILLETT Environmental Ltd – trading as Lytham St Annes Skip Hire – are a waste and recycling company created from the bottom-up over 30 years ago, by Andrew ‘Andy’ Gillett, who turns 60 this month.
Working alongside his two sons Andrew Jnr and Joe, the company serve blue chip customers from all industry sectors.
The company recently turned over £2.5million, employing over 25 staff and running a fl eet of ten trucks, with over 400 skips out on hire at any one time. But it was not all plain sailing for Andy, as his son Joe explained.
He said: “My dad grew up on a council estate with his family – it was the sort of household where you shared bathwater, and rationed your food. He worked as a ‘brickie’ at the age of 13 to start work as an odd carrier, and any wages went to his mum to help towards food.”
Half a dozen skips for £8,000
Andy signed up for the Army, and moved abroad where he met his wife Jean in 1979. After moving back to England, Andy bought a secondhand 7.5-tonne skip truck and half a dozen skips for £8,000 in 1985.
Joe added: “Over the years, my dad ran this business from the side of our semi-detached house doing what he could day and night to stay afl oat to make the business work. He’s a proper grafter!”
Years later, Andy found a disused piece of land on an industrial estate in Lytham along with a second-hand steel frame building. It was here that he set up his waste transfer station – the rest as they say is history.
Now, the company is growing year on year, and grafter Andy still works six days a week, rarely taking a day off .
Joe applauded his father. He said: “For a man who has come from nothing and to work so hard to provide a nice life for his family and build a fantastic business, it is admirable and inspiring. Not bad, all from a man’s last £8K.”
