OORLY maintained waste management and landfi ll sites cause odour and dust problems, plaguing business development and surrounding areas – much to the annoyance of staff and local residents.

By SAMUEL McKEOWN

Unwanted odour and dust is discharged into the atmosphere, usually caused by a lack of planning or lengthy turnover times for waste reduction.

However, potential dust and odour issues can be avoided by adhering to guidelines provided by our experts from LDH Attachments, Hampshire; ACE Plant, Milton Keynes; Fercell Engineering, Kent; and Renby Limited, Chester.

1

THE emergence of the sector. The Odour and Dust sector’s rise is due to

clearer understanding of the impact of pollution, and the requirement to control it at community and legislative level – Mark Fletcher FERCELL Engineering Managing Director (below).

EFFICIENCY. Maintaining any unit requires changing the air, oil and

fuel fi lters according to the maintenance schedule and not running the units over with a low loader. Draining the units when the temperature drops below freezing is also necessary to protect the pumps and pipes – LDH Attachments.

Effi ciency comes from regular servicing while keeping the manufacturer’s instructions in mind – Robin Travis, Renby Limited Managing Director.

PRICE is a big part of any business when deciding on equipment in

relation to production of the equipment. Ironically our most expensive unit is our best seller because of the customer-value through its integrated generator and 2200L tank; saving the customer time and hassle with trailing leads and hose pipes.

Our other most popular unit is the smallest unit named the ‘Nano’. This unit can work from ground level, or be mounted on a platform to expel a mist at roof height to improve the air quality for workers – LDH Attachments.

The growth in odour and dust’s many diff erent sectors over the last few years is down to the public’s improved understanding of the negative impact dust and odour has on the environment and the public’s health – ACE Plant.

wellbeing and people within the vicinity. Achieve dust prevention through selecting the correct equipment for specifi c tasks, and maintaining equipment throughout its lifespan – ACE Plant.

The system should be planned with the application in mind to control odours and dust, because a fi lter specifi cally- designed for one system may not work when applied to another – Mark Fletcher, FERCELL Engineering Managing Director.

AVOIDING mishaps. Control of dust is high priority in relation to staff

SPECIFICS. During the seven years we have been supplying these

dust control units we listened to customers, and tailored the products to their needs.

Our Tera Series of dust suppression now come with adjustable water consumption and droplet size as standard, and can be mounted on the customers own trailer or on a site/road legal trailer supplied by the company – LDH Attachments.

BROADENING HORIZONS. A lot depends upon the outcome of negotiations linked to the UK’s exit from the European Union and how easy trading will be with other markets. Some companies do not have the option of uprooting their operations and relocating to a diff erent country – Mark Fletcher, FERCELL Engineering Managing Director.

We are happy with the arrangements and growth with our various European and international partners. Europe is still the fi rst port of call, but the uncertainty surrounding Brexit still looms.

CANZUK (Canada, New Zealand and Australia) is on the cards for the odour and dust market, but it depends on freedom of movement – Robin Travis, Renby Limited Managing Director.

INSURANCE is not necessarily needed because insurance companies

do not drive product development – Mark Fletcher, FERCELL Engineering Managing Director.

PREVENTING dust particles such as silicosis, asbestos fi bres and wood dust

through designing a solution to deal with the vast majority of materials, including carbon, cement, coff ee, composite, fi bre, fl our, gypsum, metals, plastics, fumes and gases. This is done by providing information on the substance which needs to be controlled – Mark Fletcher, FERCELL Engineering Managing Director.

FURTHER growth relies on legislation and greater enforcement of current legislation,

but the government, for the short to mid-term, will be preoccupied with the arrangements for the UK’s exit from the EU – Robin Travis, Renby Limited Managing Director.

The environment is clearly high on the public and media’s agenda, and it should be a governmental priority too. We hope and expect organisations will become more responsible for their outputs and individual eff ects. Considering The Environmental Impact Act was passed in 1990, it is quite possible this could be updated in the near future – Mark Fletcher, FERCELL Engineering Managing Director.

CHEAP and easy alternatives? Regular service will save money in the long-

term, but looking at containment should be the fi rst step for anyone, and this can be done through something as simple as using a sheet to cover up a skip – Robin Travis, Renby Limited Managing Director.

Unless you can stop processes which create dust there isn’t anything to stop dust. However, improvements in the containment, process and suppression will also help, providing they have been specifi cally designed for the application – Mark Fletcher, FERCELL Engineering Managing Director.

Potentially insurance could come into the frame with odour and dust, but anyone dealing with fi re suppression or dust suppression needs to know how to utilise suppressive techniques. For example, in relation to fi re surpression there needs to be a suffi cient amount of moisture in the air to create the fog – Robin Travis, Renby Limited Managing Director (below).
