Large investment marks latest stage in Binn Group growth
A MULTI-MILLION pound investment in plant and vehicles has propelled Perthshire-based recycling and resource management company Binn Group to the forefront of Scotland’s war on waste.
Hard on the heels of their £3 million development and commissioning of Scotland’s fi rst Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) facility, the leading independent waste management company is now investing around £2 million to upgrade and expand their fl eet of collection vehicles.
Binn Group Chief executive Allan MacGregor (below) explained the need for continued investment, to meet the demands of a constantly-evolving industry.
“Standing still is not an option to compete in this fi eld,” he said. “We want to continue to develop and grow, and to do that we need to invest in the very latest technology – both in terms of plant for resource handling and recycling, and in our fl eet of collection vehicles.”
Mr MacGregor explained that as environmental issues climb higher up every company’s board room agenda, the demand for more meaningful, accurate, and immediate data relating to waste collection and recycling grows.
“We have to ensure we can deliver that type of service for each and every one of our clients,” said Mr MacGregor, “ and that means keeping abreast of the changing technology. We have to keep our service delivery at the optimum level.”
Helping meet that requirement is the state-of-the-art
technology on all new Binn Group vehicles, which includes on-board weighing to feed data straight through to a computer system and provide accurate detailed recordings in real time for customers.
Binn Group’s new fl eet, currently rolling out of their Binn Ecopark headquarters at Glenfarg, includes four trade waste lorries with specialised waste stream pods, a top-loader dedicated food waste truck, three articulated lorries, two hook lift trucks and three new skip carriers.
This sees Bin Group operate a fl eet of over 50 collection vehicles throughout Perthshire, Fife, Dundee, Angus and Stirlingshire.
The company’s recently commissioned SRF plant now produces around 5,000 tonnes of separated, dehydrated, shredded and baled waste each month.
The work being carried out 24/7 at Scotland’s fi rst and only SRF facility, is now diverting waste from fuel and energy, which previously went to landfi ll.
Binn Group’s recent and ongoing investment is at the forefront of Scottish Government ambitions for landfi ll reduction, and the full recycling circular economy.
Mr MacGregor is confi dent this latest round of major investment will cement Binn Group’s position as a key industry operator in Scotland.
“From a skip hire company launched as an agriculture diversifi cation scheme in 2001, we have grown to be recognised as one of the key players in the industry, employing more than 140 people,” said Mr MacGregor.
“That development, coupled with our continuing drive to lead the fi eld in recycling and resource management in Scotland, shows the passion and commitment of everyone involved at Binn Group. “Seeing how far we have come, makes me proud every single day.”
Chambers Group stays true to word with new HQ
ONE of the South East’s largest privately owned recycling and quarrying companies has stayed true to their word by resurfacing the yard at their new headquarters with recycled products. Over 90 per cent of the concrete poured onto the yard – which is larger than a football pitch - at Chambers Waste Management’s new £3 million hub in Guildford has been made, using washed recycled ballast sourced from the fi rm’s own recycling operations at Chambers Runfold in Farnham. Chambers’ new 1138 sq metre-HQ building is being developed at North Moors in Guildford and will house Chambers Waste Management Plc’s administration departments, and the company’s 60-strong fl eet of skip and waste collection vehicles. The vehicles will be maintained and serviced all on one site. Peter Chambers, Group Chairman and CEO, said: “In line with our company ethos, we have ensured the construction of our new head offi ce has been as environmentally friendly as possible. Resurfacing our new yard has taken seven months to complete, and we are

proud of the cleaner and safer working environment we have created. The concrete is very high strength, and has been made using recycled aggregates from the inert waste our sister company Chambers Runfold Plc, have and washed.
We look forward to unveiling our new completed headquarters and workshop facilities later this year.”
The new HQ is the latest element of Chambers’ ongoing investment programme to boost further growth and enhance their green credentials.
Finance director Emma Chambers added: “The construction of our new offi ce building means all departments are able to work together in one building.
"In addition, we are also refurbishing the workshop to replace our smaller premises in Jacobs Well to enable us to service and maintain all our vehicles at one depot.
"The new facilities are adjacent to our recycling facility in Slyfi eld, which will reduce travel between depots and in turn reduce our carbon footprint, optimise staff time and bring cost savings.”
