ontinuing our theme of inviting younger judges, it was a privilege to welcome Izzy Whittaker from the Knowlesmere herd in Shropshire and currently with Holstein International to judge our Winter Herd Competition.

C

Describing her judging she said: “I met lots of enthusiastic breeders and saw some super cows in impressive herds. I was extremely impressed. One thing that stood out for me was the vast number of youthful- looking old cows I saw – among a number of highlights I saw two sixth calvers, a seventh calver and three eighth calvers, as well as a number of EX94 and EX95 cows. It was really difficult placing each entrant – it doesn’t feel right to have a ‘bottom end’ when in reality everything was of a high standard.

“For the herds section, I was really torn between the top two herds. In the end I went for the herd that impressed me for its quality for the number of cows they have. The second placed herd also left me really impressed – particularly for the outstanding udders in the group. “Again for the family group, it was the top two that really stood out for me. The first place family was one of the first I saw and they made a lasting impression for their wide rumps, dairy strength and great udders.”

Both Alan Robson, Brockafield Holsteins, (retiring President) and David Booth (past chairman) in their reports spoke of what an honour and a pleasure it had been to serve the Lancashire Club. Helen Eastham, Samlea Holsteins, (HYB co-ordinator) spoke of how well all of the young members had performed both as a team and as individuals and how proud she was of them all. She also thanked Anthony Jackson, Crookgate, her fellow co- ordinator, for all of his help. We were honoured to have Richard Jones, the chief executive of Holstein UK as our guest speaker, who promised

that the Society was doing everything in it’s power to be of as much help as it could be to it’s members. We all had the impression that the Society is being steered in the right direction and has a sound future.

The results of the Winter Herd Competition were announced by our secretary and then awarded by Gail Robson with judge Eddie Griffiths, Coachgate Holsteins, saying a few words afterwards.
