size and frame in to the cows. Since then Shottle and Talent have both worked well in the herd and although we never used Goldwyn himself his sons have worked successfully, particularly on Shottle daughters.” Currently David is impressed with Mincio and Atwood daughters that have calved in. “Mincios are all peas in a pod, consistently square throughout, strength through the front end, square rumps and he reigns in stature on bigger cows, while Atwood is breeding the special ones. Mogul is doing a similar job to Mincio and breeding manageable cows, while I’m using McCutchen to do the opposite and put size, frame and style in to smaller, stronger cows. Wickam and Elude are other bulls that are being used.”

Over the past 18 months a lot of bulls have been used with Snowman in the pedigree, David believes he is the only Oman son with type and offers something different in a sire stack. Younger calves that are looking well are by Silver and Elude, they are nice framed calves with hard tops, with current sires being used including Bankroll, Beamer, Motivator, Elude, Denin, Silver and High Octane.

Usually between 20 and 25 straws of a bull are ordered and then David moves on to the next ones, occasionally going back to a bull, but he feels that genetics are moving so fast that you need to keep moving in order to have marketable progeny. Each year a couple of cows are flushed to get a family established. “Until the last six months I’ve always been quite lucky getting heifer calves from the best cows which has always helped to keep families developing, but I seem to have hit a run of bulls calves. Flushing pays for itself easily, even with a good bull calf, but it can also be easy to be disappointed with a bad result. Like selling, you have to keep at it for the luck to balance out.”

Feizor Knowledge S Melody 3

Cows are fed a home grown TMR of grass silage, maize silage, maxammon treated spring barley and blend to 32 litres and topped up a little in the parlour. Although the herd is usually housed all year round David hopes to have them turned out to allow it easier for visitors to view them all on the open day.
