A

s the summer show season kicks off we are still hoping for improved weather…and milk prices, unfortunately neither are guaranteed.

There has been a run of milking portion and dispersal sales of leading herds across the country and notably the Passion for Pedigree Sale from Sahara and Wiltor has given pedigree breeders reassurance that there is value for top class pedigree cattle.

Show reports this issue include Celtic Dairy Showcase, Western Spring Show and Balmoral Show, the standard and quality has been high at all shows, however, numbers have been less – a result of TB restrictions in some areas.

The spring shows were filled with the buzz of the European Championship selection and after many miles travelled by the selection committee and Alison Maddrell with Bluetongue vaccine, the team has now been selected and the championships are just around the corner.

Also around the corner is the European Referendum and who really knows which outcome will be the best result for the UK and ultimately agriculture. However, the result could pave a different future for farmers.

This issue is focussed on ‘Adding Value to Milk’, something that is particularly topical as everyone suffers to varying extents in the current milk crisis and many farm businesses are considering

alternative ways of selling their milk.

Herd features include Simon

and Tim Jones’ Poachers herd where Poachers Cheese has been made for 26 years, Rhys Lougher has been processing and retailing milk at Tanglwyst for 10 years, both long established, successful businesses. While breeding decisions made in the Jones family’s Rossett herd are resulting in cattle that are A2 positive, a growing market in the UK.

Industry articles also follow this theme looking at ways to make the most of milk contracts, as well as, scrutinising cost of production and producing less slurry. East Midlands Club is the featured Club this issue, their chosen herd was the Welbeck herd which is hosting a farm walk in June having heavily invested in a new setup. This feature also fitted in well with this issue’s topic as they are getting a premium for some of their milk.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as editor of The Journal for the past 11 issues, meeting so many interesting Holstein breeders at home and events and seeing round many farms and herds, as well as seeing a lot of the UK on my travels. The Holstein cow creates so many opportunities and friendships not only locally, but globally. There is a brand new marketing team at Holstein UK and I wish them and Anglia Farmers the best of luck with The Journal in the future.
