Christopher Yaniz No Easy Path
A teacher’s influence can have a profound
impact on a student’s life. Such was the case with Mrs. Sanchez and Christopher Yaniz. At first, he thought his middle school teacher was always sticking her nose into his affairs.
“She didn’t like the people I was hanging around with and repeatedly called my adoptive mom to let her know. She sat me down one day and talked to me about how I needed to make friends with people who had more of the same interests. She told me if I stayed with people who were too laid back to work and who caused trouble at school, my future would not look good,” Christopher said. “Today, I realize how much Mrs. Sanchez helped me turn a corner in my life. It goes to show that school teachers can make a big difference in a young person’s future, so now I volunteer with several nonprofit organizations to help children who’ve had similar experiences.”
a hard time for me. Then I met Vicki Perez and her team at Express Employment Professionals. They helped me get through the tough times,” he said.
Christopher’s path took quite a few twists during those years as Express sent him all over Miami, Florida placing him in different industries with each new assignment. “I loved it because I learned so much,” Christopher said. “I had all sorts of jobs. I worked in property management, insurance, the health field, and automotive industry. I even worked on the beach selling candy. No matter what the job was, I was able to expand my résumé and gain experience.”
I think about all
my experiences and I just say to myself, ‘Hey, I’m a fighter.’
He went on to graduate from vocational school with skills as a graphic designer, but that field wasn’t as interesting to him as he thought it would be. “So there I was searching for a job in the middle of the recession. I was struggling to find work. I was young and inexperienced. It was
A positive attitude and willingness to learn helped Christopher stand out as an employee, and soon he was making the right connections with the right people. During a short stint at a bank, Christopher found himself assisting the human resources director. “She was impressed by how hard I worked,” Christopher said, “Later when she moved to a new position she called me about a full-time opening there. I’ve only been on the job a short while, but I can already tell I am going to enjoy it.”
Christopher plans to keep on climbing. “I think about all my experiences and I just say to myself, ‘Hey, I’m a fighter.’ No matter what obstacles are in front of me, I’ve gone through much, much worse. Now, I want a career. I have goals and I appreciate all the people, including the team at Express, who are helping me progress toward those goals.”
