Sherry Preston Persistence Pays
A fter she graduated from high school in
Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Sherry Preston was anxious to leave town and start a new life. She wanted to move to California to live with her dad. Before she left, Sherry met her soon-to-be husband, Mike, who went with her to California where they were married.
During her time in California, Sherry endured many trying times which would test her strength and courage. In 2001, Mike passed away leaving Sherry a widow and a single mom at a relatively young age. Despite her tragedy, she forged ahead and went to work for the district attorney’s office in Ventura County. “I really liked the work because I was making an impact in people’s lives,” Sherry said.
Unfortunately, that job didn’t last very long. The position was eliminated due to state budget cuts. It was the start of a long and difficult time in California’s economy and there weren’t many job opportunities.
Sherry decided it was a good time to move back to Bartlesville where the economy was stronger and she could be near her sister, as well as her extended family.
Once in Oklahoma, Sherry landed a job at a local insurance agency but the position didn’t offer any opportunity for advancement and she was laid off after three years. Not to be deterred, she tenaciously pursued a new job and submitted
her application to all three staffing companies in town. “I called the three employment agencies every day, every morning at eight o’clock.”
Her persistence paid off. One morning, she made her daily phone call to Express Employment Professionals. They had an opening and asked how soon she could be on the job. An hour and a half later, she was on a temporary assignment that lasted two weeks. During that time, Sherry proved she was willing to go above and beyond in her job. The two-week assignment turned into nine months. That job led to another nine- month temporary position. The company was so impressed with Sherry they hired her full time. “If it wasn’t for Express, I would never have gotten my foot in the door and been able to secure a full-time position with this company,” Sherry said.
She now lives a very satisfying life. Sherry has her own apartment, a good car, and can afford to pursue hobbies she once could not. She dabbles in photography, jewelry making, and crocheting.
“It’s been wonderful. This job has made a big difference in my life,” Sherry said. “I can do some of the extras that I was not able to before. Life is so much better.”
