Deidra Viney From Lemonade Stands to Express Employment Professionals D eidra Viney was born a salesperson.

Growing up in Philadelphia, she loved setting up lemonade stands and selling Girl Scout cookies. In high school, she joined Future Business Leaders of America and held her first steady job as a babysitter for her neighbor’s kids. When Deidra headed off to college, she majored in finance and interned with a bank. After graduation, the bank offered her a full- time job as a commercial lender, helping fledgling companies get business loans.

Deidra always wanted to own a business and, as she interviewed entrepreneurs during the loan process, she was fascinated with their business ventures. In her spare time, she began researching possible business opportunities. When she looked at franchises, she saw the advantage of having a support system.

“I knew I wanted a business that would not take up all of my time 365 days of the year,” she said. “It needed to be something that would fit my personality and yet be an endeavor that would stay around for years, not something seasonal or fly-by-night. I considered cleaning companies and vending companies, and even went to franchise expos to see if anything appealed to me, but nothing seemed to be the right fit.”

Eventually, Deidra honed-in on staffing companies because they met so many of her criteria. “I was looking at various staffing providers. They were courting me, and I was courting them,” she said. “Then one day I happened to strike up a conversation with an acquaintance who was a business broker, so I asked him if he knew of any franchises for sale and he recommended Express.”

After that day, Deidra put Express Employment Professionals on her list. The more she found out about them, the more she liked them. “From the very beginning, their professionalism won me over, and the rest–as they say–is history. That was 13 years ago,” she said.

Deidra’s office is located in Jersey City, New Jersey, and as she gazes out her office window across the Hudson River to the New York City skyline, she often thinks about how much she loves her business. “I think it’s exciting to see people find work so they can provide for their families,” Deidra said. “I also love the other end of the staffing process, helping businesses fill their needs with the right people. It makes me feel good to be able to provide them with good employees.”

Deidra always stresses to job seekers how much of a difference a positive outlook can make on any person’s career. “One time, a client called saying he needed someone in his office for only two days. We tried offering this opportunity to several people, but they kept turning us down. Finally, we found one lady who agreed to go to work for those two days. The company loved her and hired her full time. She eventually became their office manager, so now she calls us all the time for workers.”

Deidra definitely practices what she preaches. Her positive attitude has always led to her success–whether it was selling cookies or now running a top staffing business.
