Jim Britton Helping People Succeed A side from seven years in the restaurant
business, Jim Britton has spent his entire career in staffing, and it has been a perfect match for him.
Born in Springfield, Illinois, Jim grew up in a subdivision just three miles west of the city. He graduated from Pleasant Plains Community High School in a class of only 30 students. After earning his degree in business administration from Western Illinois University, he ran his own Italian restaurant franchise, but was ready for a change.
Jim realized that many businesses such as grocery stores, department stores, restaurants, and real estate offices fell into two categories: “Mom and Pop” stores or national chains. He wanted to be affiliated with a company that had a national presence and offered support far beyond what an individual could provide for themselves.
“My wife and I were still quite young and had three children ages three, six, and nine when we invested our entire life savings in 1980 into a franchise with then Acme Personnel. When I acquired my franchise, I remember Bob Funk, a vice president at Acme then, picking me up at the Oklahoma City airport in a yellow Cadillac Eldorado,” Jim said.
Three years after Jim opened his office, Acme’s president passed away quite suddenly, and the company went into bankruptcy.
Although Acme went out of business, Jim and his wife, Carole, continued working in the staffing industry as independent owners. At the same time, Bob along with two other business associates from Acme, purchased several franchises of Acme which later became Express Employment Professionals.
Jim stayed in contact with Bob. Then in 1986, Bob arranged a meeting with Jim to encourage him to buy an Express franchise and become a Regional Developer for the newly formed staffing company.
“Looking to the future, I decided I could go further faster, and with greater security, with someone other than just myself,” Jim said.
Twenty-eight years later, Jim has never looked back on his decision. “So much of the success I’ve been able to enjoy is because of the people I’ve surrounded myself with, from team members who work for us and with us, to the people at Express International Headquarters who help us navigate both the changes in our industry and in the national economy,” Jim said.
As a successful business person and franchise owner, Jim’s goal is to develop people in terms of their knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for the business. He enjoys helping people succeed, whether they are job seekers or potential franchise owners. It is obvious that Jim is very proud of his accomplishments when it comes to developing his staff and fellow franchisees.
“Express has many, many success stories of people who come in the door in a fragile or frightened condition, and walk out with a place to go to work,” Jim said.
