Wakina Buxton-Frazier A Relay to Success

O riginally from New Jersey, Wakina Buxton-

Frazier began working early in life. At just 16, she got her first job while also completing high school.

Wakina attended college for a while, but her primary focus was on finding a job that would help her gain experience and build a career. Wakina found herself moving from one job to another, from nonprofit to the corporate sector. She enjoyed the challenges of the varied settings, and established a solid core of office and administrative skills. Eventually, Wakina decided she wanted a change of pace and relocated from the high-pressure, fast-moving lifestyle of New Jersey and settled in Atlanta, Georgia.

In Atlanta, Wakina learned that many large companies built their workforces through staffing companies. Always seeking the opportunity for continued growth and success, she began working with Express Employment Professionals in the Atlanta Mid-Town office. That’s where she met her hero and mentor, owner Calvin Green. Along with what she calls “tough love,” Calvin provided Wakina with encouragement and backing.

“He always tries to push people to be their best,” Wakina said. “He believed in me and put in the effort to help me reach my goals. He always stood behind my career development 100 percent.”

She told her mentor that, first and foremost, she was looking for stability and a chance to grow. She was tired of moving from job to job, whether it was because of relocating, a challenging economy, or a company closing.

Right away, Express found a job for her as a receptionist. Although Wakina’s skills and experience made her overqualified for the position, Calvin told her that the company was solid and offered chances to move up if she proved herself.

Wakina trusted his advice and took the job. She worked hard to establish herself as a reliable professional and accepted any new responsibility that was offered to her. When another employee left, she was offered that job. Settling into that company made Wakina feel like a burden had been lifted from her shoulders.

Today, she enjoys her job and looks forward to new opportunities within the company. “I feel stable, and I have an opportunity to grow with this company,” she said.

Wakina’s quick to credit Express for not only finding her a good job with potential, but also for the hard work in supporting and encouraging her.

“I’m very grateful to Express. Without them I wouldn’t be in this job,” Wakina said.

In addition to her full-time job, she is also working on opening her own small business in her spare time. She’s determined that the skills she’s learned in building a stable career can also be used to help other people.

“My overall goal is to be a success story...to leave a legacy,” she said.
