Sports betting began in the Netherlands in 1957 when the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) began to organise it. Te KNVB organised sports betting until 1961 when sports betting was legalised as a second state monopoly and the Stichting Nationale Sporttotalisator (De Lotto) was founded to take over.

Football Association asked for permission to organise a national Toto in 1956. Tis began a year later and in 1961 lotteries also entered the game. By the year 2000 all the brands came under the name Stichting de Nationale Sporttoalisator (SNS) with the registered name of De Lotto. It is controlled by the Ministry of Security and


Justice and the Gaming Authority and the brands include Lotto, Toto, Lucky Day, Scratch cards and Euro Lotto Jackpot. Tickets can be bought via retailers in tobacco shops,
