cy A.T. Kearney, the respected award recognizes the exceptional flexibility of ASM’s placement machine production. By consistently focusing on the value chain with concepts like lean manu- facturing, lot size 1 and by developing an innovative factory floor layout, the company can accommodate order fluc- tuations of up to 60 percent — an im- portant competitive factor for the sup- plier of production equipment to the electronics industry. The company has implemented

many successful digital initiatives to make it more productive, including monitors that display order-specific

Handling Heat with Shrinking Metamaterials

Page 46

Cambridge, MA — Almost all solid materials, from rubber and glass to granite and steel, inevitably expand when heated. Only in very rare in- stances do certain materials buck this thermodynamic trend and shrink with heat. For instance, cold water will contract at temperatures between 0 and 4°C (32 and 39.2°F), before expanding. Engineers from MIT and elsewhere are now adding to this curious class of heat-shrink- ing materials. The team, led by Nicholas X. Fang, associate professor of engineering at MIT, has manufac- tured tiny, star-shaped structures out of interconnected beams, or trusses. The structures, each about

the size of a sugar cube, quickly shrink when heated to about 282°C (540°F). Each structure’s trusses are

made from typical materials that ex- pand with heat. Fang and his col- leagues realized that these trusses, when arranged in certain architec- tures, can pull the structure inward, causing it to shrink like a Hoberman sphere — a collapsible toy ball made from interconnecting lattices and joints. The researchers consider the

structures to be “metamaterials” — composite materials whose configu- rations exhibit strange, often coun- terintuitive properties that are not normally found in nature. In some cases, these structures’ resistance to expanding when heated — rather than their shrinking response per se —may be especially useful. Such ma- terials could find applications in computer chips, for example, which can warp and deform when heated for long periods of time. “Printed circuit boards can heat up when there’s a CPU running, and

of the Year award, for the eighth con- secutive year, along with the Long Service award. The awards were presented by

Abby Tsoi of SMTA China. Wendling continuously supports SMTA China’s events while actively promoting SM- TA China conferences, events and technical seminars globally, and has done so for many years. Wendling’s role as advisory council member of SMTA China is to
