MEMBER ZONE MEMBERPROFILE NAME: Fiona Pocock
COMPANY: Bosworth Independent College
JOB TITLE: Bosworth Independent College
WHAT DOES YOUR ORGANISATION DO? We work with young people who aspire to do their best in school. We teach GCSE and A-level to local and international pupils aged 13-19.
HOW DID IT ALL START? My first teaching post was at Scarborough 6th Form College teaching French and Latin. It feels as though I’ve come full circle now, working with students preparing for GCSE and A-level again after a spell in a boarding school, university teaching and the commercial world. I’ve been a Principal since 2002.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST IN YOUR JOB? I’m astonished and hugely grateful to witness how many extra miles my colleagues go to support their students.
WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT? I always have a sleepless night before exam results are published each summer. It’s a mixture of trepidation and excitement as I long for the best outcomes for students, teachers and parents who have invested so much.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE EVER TAKEN – AND DID IT WORK OUT? My husband and I took a huge risk in 2000 when we did a role swap. Until then, we had dovetailed our working days so as to share looking after our two sons. I took a job in IT which required lots of training and travel. I wasn’t sure I could do it but it worked out well. I loved the job and benefited from working in all sorts of companies from large blue chip enterprises to smaller businesses all over the UK. My experience in the commercial world was great fun and gave me insights into a wide range of businesses. My husband was happier at home than he’d ever been at work.
‘IT FELT IMPORTANT
TO US TO BUILD NETWORKS WITH LOCAL
BUSINESSES AND TO LEARN WHAT MATTERS TO THEM’
WHAT EXCITING PROJECTS IS YOUR ORGANISATION WORKING ON? We plan to start working with Year 9 students who will be laying firm foundations for their GCSE years but who won’t initially have to meet the demands of external exams, allowing us the luxury of working on things like confidence, communication and collaboration.

WHAT MADE YOU JOIN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CHAMBER AND HOW ARE YOU MAKING USE OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP? It felt important to us to build networks with local businesses and to learn what matters to them. We enjoy the breakfast and lunch meetings, telling other members about Bosworth and finding out what they do too. It’s surprising how few members know that we work with local pupils as well as international students and so the opportunity to make the college as well known in Northampton as it is in Moscow, for example, is especially pleasing.
