Going Out - Page 55 HELP Makes More Donations

Last month HELP Murcia Mar Menor has been able to make donations to charities Caritas Torre Pacheco and A.M.M.A., from funds raised during 2015, to enable them to carry on their good works.

On Wednesday 4th May Pat Massingham HELP’s President, accompanied by Vice President Elaine Dale, presented Snr. Jose Garcia Martinez, President of Caritas Torre Pacheco with a cheque for 2000€ which will enable Caritas to continue its work in the area. Torre Pacheco is a large town and there are at least 500 families in need of help, which Caritas does in different ways. It provides free food and clothing to families with no income or benefits. It also runs a small supermarket where people who have vouchers can buy food at much reduced

prices. Caritas also runs a shelter for the homeless where they can stay for up to three nights. They are able to house up to sixteen people who get bed, breakfast, and use of a shower. These people are normally brought in by the police and are in genuine need. Caritas also runs a centre for children with learning difficulties. These children are helped with extra lessons in order to achieve a higher standard in their own time.

On Friday 6th May it was the turn of A.M.M.A. (Alzheimer Mar Menor Association) to be presented with a cheque which will swell their funds and enable them to continue to run workshops for people with dementia in the San Pedro del Pinatar area. These workshops are supervised by professionals and at the moment they are able to look after up to ten people on a Wednesday and Friday morning between 9.30am and 12.30pm and provide some respite for the families. Again Pat Massingham the President of HELP Murcia Mar Menor presented a cheque for 2000€ to Raquel Peña, President of A.M.M.A. who was accompanied by Belen Quieruga at the Pensionistas Club in San Pedro del Pinatar. Raquel Peña said during the presentation, that one of the future aims of A.M.M.A. is to establish a residential care home in the area for those suffering from Alzheimers and other dementias. “The old Los Arcos hospital would make a perfect care home for those in need of help” she said. HELP Murcia Mar Menor has supported A.M.M.A. in past years and was pleased to make another donation from funds raise by HELP during 2015.

Trip to Úbeda, Baesa and Cazorla 53 members left Albir on Friday 13th May having no idea what treats were in store over the next 3 days. Despite cloudy skies a happy group arrived 405 kms later at the hotel in Villanueve del Arzobisto just in time for lunch. After unpacking we set off for Úbeda where we spent a lovely afternoon in the old town admiring the typical Andalucian architecture

of houses originally built for the wealthy land owners. On Saturday the morning was spent in the largest natural Park in Spain made up of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. What a breathtaking trip this was with cascading waterfalls, rivers and lakes as we travelled through the immense gorge. After lunch back at the hotel we visited Baeza – a beautiful old walled town with winding streets and ancient buildings set in the heart of the 6 million olive trees of Jaen Province. Sunday arrived all too soon and after loading the luggage onto the bus we were taken to visit two villages high up in the mountains – Chiclana and Iznatoral – both affording spectacular views of the surrounding area. We returned to the hotel for lunch and then began the journey back to Benidorm. A weary group by this time but so grateful to Rob and Liz for creating the opportunity for us all to make so many happy memories of beautiful Andalucia.

Donation to local charity. Recently, Maureen Barrett of the U3A Marina Baixa, delivered 100€ of chocolate milk in liquid and powder form, which will be distributed to needy children in La Nucia. The storage unit was almost empty! There was NOTHING in the fridge and

little on the shelves. There were cartons of long life milk and little else. Ana (welfare officer) showed her three lever arch files, the first had all the details of ‘pensioners’, the other two were ‘families’ who had little or no money, no work and needed food. The centre is extremely well run and any change of circumstances is noted in the files. The food is distributed once a week.

Fundraising Event Eighty one members had a brilliant afternoon at Maureen & John Barrett’s home, to raise money for our upcoming 10 year anniversary. We started with tomato soup, vegetable soup or gazpacho, (all great), then we had paella - expertly cooked by Liz and Rob, and Hazel and Tony and we finished up with individual home-made trifles followed by gateaux. We also had the great pleasure of live music - our members are certainly multi talented.
