Forthcoming Events
By Keith Nicol
It’s hard to believe that the longest day of the year is but a couple of weeks away and that the nights will start getting longer again.
The major event that thousands of Spanish citizens look forward to is the Fogueres de Sant Joan or Hogueras de San Juan. In Alicante the event generally takes up the entire month with each neighbourhood doing something different but similar. Hogueras has been taken up by lots of the local towns and cities and many have an evening at the
beach, in a picnic come carnival atmosphere. In Alicante there are usually five impressive night-time mascleta displays, six massive day time mascleta displays, five beautiful evenings of fireworks on the beach, an international folk parade, floral offerings and the main night of festivities, called the Crema, when the magnificent statues are burnt. The fiesta is of International Tourist Interest and well worth enjoying with the major events taking place on the 23rd and 24th of the month.
If you are on the lookout for a traditional Spanish fiesta full of colour and tradition, the Elda Moors and Christians Fiesta is for you. Participants will be parading in Elda from the 2nd to the 6th June. Almost 6,000 local residents take part in these parades. The fiesta serves to commemorate the invasion by the Moors and their eight centuries of occupation before their expulsion by the Christians in 1492. Yes, the same year that Columbus sailed the ocean blue. The centuries of occupation were not peaceful, there were continuous wars and attacks. The fiestas recreates these battles, military marches and parades bringing the past alive.
The eleventh edition of Festival Artes de Calle: ‘Artists in the Streets’ will be held in the central area of Elche from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th June. The festival attracts street performers from all over Spain and is an ideal opportunity to explore the city and enjoy the entertainment. All types of street performers will be there including acrobats, jugglers, street dancers, circus acts, theatre and the street statues which move when you place some money in their ‘hat’.
