movie. That’s where I learned about him. About Warren?
Yes. Yeah, well see, I met him on the set of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, and the day we were leaving, we got through with our part and he came up and said, “I’m doing another movie and I want to do it in the South.” He said, “You’ll be perfect in any of these parts for this.” He said, “I’ll hook you up with a di- rector.” So he really fixed me, he got me in another movie. Warren did, and we got to be good friends. He was one of the greatest ac- tors around and one of the great character ac- tors you always remember when you’re leaving the theatre.
Oh yeah, yeah. Maybe not the main star or none of that stuff but a guy just like him and Harry Dean Stan- ton and all those guys. You can leave the the- atre a lot of times remembering their parts and you wouldn’t even remember the star.
Yeah! And what I was going to say while ago was you got to work with that other great actor, Bob Dylan. (You both laugh.) Oh yeah, we had a great time, me and Bob.
Yeah. That was pretty cool. You know, the thing about Bob and I, he was in most of the scenes I did, and the fact, the thing is, that was my first movie, obviously the first movie…I appeared in a couple other ones, but this was a movie where I was in the very first scene of the movie and in and around, in and out all the way through the movie and then I was right at the end. So, in other words, I didn’t get killed or anything the way I did in most movies, so that was good.
Yeah. In this movie, I wanted to stay in it the whole
time, and Bob and I had most of our parts down, we were together in all these scenes, so we got to be friends through that. And we had some good times together.
Did you ever co-write a tune with him? No. You know what? We talked about it one day and we talked about how we were going to, you know, and we never really did and I kind of regret that. I think it was more my fault than it was his, actually, that we didn’t write. But anyway… I enjoyed being with Bob. We could have some great talks and there for about three weeks he would come by and pick me up early in the morning when we had an early call. We were shooting about 30 miles outside of Durango, Mexico. And he had a car so the production company found out about it and said, “Well, why don’t you go pick up Donnie since you’re in all these scenes together?” (Laughs) He was kind of my driver for about three weeks. That was pretty cool.
Oh yeah. We had a good time. He was really good and really picked me up. It was just a strange situ- ation that we were thrown into with Sam. Be- cause Sam was crazy. He was nuts (Buffalo laughs) in a lot of different ways. But I loved it. I loved Sam.
Well, it had to be exciting, I know. Would you name a few people that you’ve co-written with or worked with, just about four or five of ‘em and give me your thoughts on that particular person and maybe, even if you have a little antidote or a happy memory or something like that. One of my heroes that you worked with and I never got to meet was Eddie Hinton. What can you tell me about Eddie? Oh, Eddie. Eddie has been, you know, a lot has been written about Eddie - mostly a lot of the negative stuff which I don’t talk about.
