WILLIE PERKINS

by Michael Buffalo Smith Willie Perkins is perhaps best known for

his work as Tour Manager for the Allman Brothers Band between 1970 and 1976, as well as serving as co-personal manager for Gregg Allman from 1983 until 1989. A few years ago, Perkins’ first book was published by Mercer University Press. No Saints, No Saviors recounted some of the memories of his days handling the money for the ABB. It is quite an interesting and fun read. Now, Willie is the co-author (along with

Jack Weston) of the brand new book called, The Allman Brothers Band Classic Memora- bilia - 1969-1976, also from Mercer Univer- sity Press. Since its release in October, 2015, Perkins and Weston have done countless in- terviews for magazines, newspapers, radio and television, but we were one of the first to talk to Perkins about the new book, way back in October, just as it was being released.

Well I’ve known Jack for several years he’s a big collector-lives up in Minneapolis and he and I, you know, kicked around the idea for a couple of years about maybe collaborating on

And so we decided to do it, and we presented it to my publisher Mercer University Press who had previously published a book by me and they were excited about it so we started on it around last summer. and we kicked around some ideas on how best to do it and basically we just took some segments – you know there are a lot of collectors who actually physically collect this stuff and then there are a lot of people on these websites, I was amazed, these websites on Facebook go 24/7 - 365 and there’s many of them that are about the band, the original group. A lot of folks are really big fans of the original lineup before Duane and Berry passed away and we held our book to
