lyrics. Besides the new songs, I tried to grab, songs and people that I really wanted to play with like Peter Frampton. I’ve known Peter for 45 years. We toured together. Had the same agent. All of that bullshit and then a couple of years ago he asked me to play, he was doing this tour called “Frampton’s Cir- cus” and he asked me to play a couple of songs. He wanted to sing a Mountain song. So I said great. So he sang Theme From an Imaginary Western” and I sang the chorus. But then I was doing this album and I did a version of “You Are My Sunshine,” which I heard some group doing it on, I’m sure you’ve heard of that TV show the Sons of Anarchy...

That’s one of my favorite shows. I heard that song but it was in a minor key. You know, everybody knows that being a happy song, it’s in a major key. So I heard them doing it in a minor key and I said, “Wow, that sounds like a song you’d play at a funeral.” So I asked Peter if he’d play on it and I played slide guitar and he played, you know, regular guitar. We played together and my God, it was like wow, we did it! Finally at last! It was a big thrill for me.

Oh Yeah. You know, I remember that from when I was just a little kid. I think that was the first song I ever learned to play on the guitar. Way, way back.

I don’t doubt it. Yeah, way back.

You doing that song was quite a sur- prise and another pleasant surprise was you covering that old Curtis May- field, “People Get Ready.” I was like, “Wow, this is cool!” Well you know what? I do that every night on stage. I’ve been doing it for six years.

Oh have you? It’s a great song.

I usually do it myself, but my bass player now, me and him do it live with just synthesizer playing background violins. It’s something you wouldn’t expect out of me.That’s true but by the same token, you knocked it out of the park so it’s all that matters. Well, thank you. That’s very appreciated.

I was so happy to see my friend Bonnie Bramlett on the album singing back up with you. Ah, no kidding? She’s a friend of yours?

Yeah, she’s a sweetheart. She’s the best.

And “Going Down” is a great song too man. I’ve heard that song before, but boy your version is smoking and I am aquatinted with David Hood as well. Well, you know how it happened was a friend of mine, John Tinsley, was producer for Don Nix. And Don Nix wrote the song.

Right. And I don’t think Don Nix plays an instru- ment, really. He sang it, originally. Brian May is playing on it and myself and Bonnie’s singing in the background ,and Bobby Whit- lock’s on it and Mack Middleton - some great guys on it. I called John up and I said, I don’t know what the hell Don Nix did with this but I’d love to do it. He says well, you can’t use Don’s voice. I said, “Yeah I realize that. If only I could get to the master tapes.” He said, “I have them in my office. I’ll send them to you tomorrow. You sing it.” I said, “Okay, I’ll sing it.” And when it originally came out he didn’t even have Brian May on the thing. \He didn’t even realize that Brian May was play- ing the guitar. You know, the way we did it, I did the first half of the song, the lead guitar and Brian did the second half from the lead guitar on out Having Brian May on there, I mean, he doesn’t do many albums you know, for people.
