CHARLIE STARR THE KUDZOO INTERVIEW

By Michael Buffalo Smith The interview you are about to read has

been a long time comin.’ I first saw Black- berry Smoke around the turn of the century at the old Handlebar club in Greenville, SC. At that time, they had a relatively small but ap- preciative audience. The crowds today ae still appreciative, probably moreso, but small does not enter into the conversation. The band continues to “spread the Smoke” all over the world, and have performed with everyone from George Jones to ZZ Top, and headlining countless shows to sold out venues all over this great land of ours. So, after seeing Charlie Starr do his thing

for the first time back in 2000, I immediately made plans to interview him for my then magazine, GRITZ. Of course, the stars never lined up, and I moved on to other bands. A few years back my friend Scott Greene

started telling me about the band and how they were the greatest thing since Gov’t Mule. I started inhaling the Smoke and quickly rekindled my early love for the band. By now, we had started KUDZOO Magazine and the KUDZOO Radio Hour. So back in 2012 some friends helped to put me in touch with Charlie Starr, and I scheduled him as a guest on the radio show. Now, the only real mistake I made was about ten minutes into the show. I had Charlie on the line, and had all my ques- tions ready. Suddenly, the phone lines lit up, and I started taking calls. Well sir, that was all she wrote. I may have slid one or two ques-

tions in, but the night was mostly a non-stop string of callers that wanted to speak to Char- lie about how much they loved his music, or just loved him. It was our second highest rated show ever, the first being our interview with Billy Bob Thornton. Which brings us to the now. When I met

Charlie backstage in Atlanta at their recent “homecoming” show, I finally had a chance to give him my contatct info and tell him I really wanted to make him our cover boy. With some helo from Eric and Trish Almy, the whole thing finally fell together. Finally!
