Yeah, it was quite an eclectic mix of musicians I think. Yeah. I love that. It’s amazing.
The jam on that is about as good as you can get from a song. Oh, no kidding. Probably. It was simple and a lot of fun.
the beginning of Mountain, I used a Sun P.A. It wasn’t a guitar amp, it was a P.A. amp, and it was total luck that we had an endorsement with Sun. The first show was at the Fillmore West, Mountain’s first show. And they deliv- ered these amps to the hotel. I was expecting to get Marshall’s. And I said, “what in the hell am I going to do with these Sun amps?” They looked like guitar amps. The heads were like regular heads. The cabinets were 4 x 12’s but the unusual thing is that there was a P.A. head, and there were four mike inputs, which were like, well... in a guitar amp you plugged it in and then there was a master volume. But that was the beginning of everybody starting to copy it, making amps that had a pre-amp and then a master. Before that, we had one volume on an amp - crank it up, and like Mar- shall’s, they didn’t have pre-amps in ‘em back then, but the amps just happened to have a nice distortion sound. So I plugged it into the mike input and I distorted the mike, even though it wasn’t a mike, it was my guitar… and then I turned the master up and I said, “I I think I may have found something here.” So I used that for four years and now, now on this album and the last albums I used Black Star amps and I have my own line of guitars, with Dean guitars, the Leslie West models.
Right. A lot of fun.
Well, Leslie, it seems to me that a lot of guys over the years, their voice has weakened, but yours just seems to get more powerful. I love it. Oh, thank you.
The thing I was saying earlier about the guitar, your tone is so amazing. What kind of guitars and amps do you use to get that sound? I always use a Les Paul junior. And back in
Oh, Okay. There’s about five different models. If you go to the Dean guitar website you can see some of the models on there. They’re based on the Les Paul Junior.
Right. Nice. And they’re really good-looking guitars and they play really well so… it’s nice I have my own. You know, it’s funny you just said that about my vocals because I had bladder cancer about seven years ago and thank God they found it early and I’m cancer-free. I stopped smoking.
