die is that my wife will sell all the guitars for the prices I told her I paid for them.” (Both laugh)
That’s hilarious! Yeah.
Speaking of guitars, there’s one guitar out there that me and you have both played. Can you believe that? Duane Allman’s Goldtop.
Yeah, exactly. Let me ask you, did you… I did, but did you feel any kind of a vibe on that thing at all? I did. It felt like I was holding a ghost.
Yeah, that’s the way I felt. I kinda got goose bumps and I almost felt, for a second I was like, “I shouldn’t be playing this thing. It’s a little bit too holy, you know.” But I took a chance…Well, by then though, it’s been played by about 90 people.
I remember back in 2009 it was the 40 year Anniversary of the Allman Broth- ers, and thanks to that Moogus thing that Butch Trucks had, I was watching every show of the Beacon run at night through my computer over the Bose speakers like I was at the concert. They had the Goldtop out there and everybody from Clapton to John Hammond played it, Susan Tedeschi of course, Derek and everybody and on down the line. Los Lobos, everybody, and I was like, “Yeah man, I’d love to play that thing.” Well, then I met Richard down at the Big House and he just pulls this thing out and goes, “Here, play it.” Thank you! I was scared. Oh yeah.
I was holding it like I was holding an egg, you know. Right.
I was scared to death. Well, the first time I held it, the guy that owns
it actually came with Richard Brent. We were opening for Zac Brown in Atlanta at the Verizon Amphitheatre and Zac played it. And that was the first night I held it. The man said, “How does it feel to hold a million dollar guitar?” And I said, “It feels like I oughta put it down!” (Both laughing)
Yeah, that’s right. Before I do something with it. Make a mistake. Exactly.
Well, let’s see, I’ve got just a couple more things here. I wanted to say is uh, you know, well January has been like a really sucky month for rock & roll. I had a friend, I don’t know if you ever heard of Swampdawamp? But my buddy, Gig Michaels, their lead singer died; and then we lost Lemmy; then David Bowie; then Glenn Frey. Were friends or a fan of any of those folks? All of ‘em. A fan, that is. And I met Gig several times on those cruises.
He was a great guy. My mom actually told me about that because I’m not on Facebook. She said, “Hey, Gig Michaels died,” and told me it was pneumonia. Big surprise, too.
It was terrible. Yeah. I had a friend years ago named Joe, I played in bands with him for a long time and he got- this is about eight years ago - another one of our good friends called me and said, “Joe died yesterday.” And I had to sit down. I was like, “What?” And he said, “Yeah, he got swine flu and didn’t know it.” He got sick and like most of us, wouldn’t go to the doctor. He just kept taking medicine like, “I’ll be alright. I’ve just got the flu.” And it killed him. By the time he did go to the hospital, the doctor said, “There’s nothing we can do. Your kidneys are shutting down.”
Wow, wow… It’s crazy.
