Going Out - Page 54 Vega Baja Garden Club.
The November meeting of the Vega Baja Garden Club was hosted by Irene Davis. She reminded the meeting of the many garden tasks for the forthcoming month. It is a good time to plant sweet peas and other annuals for next season, and to pot up plants for Christmas flowering.
Irene introduced Ron Harris, the main speaker for the afternoon. Ron is a well known
member of the Garden Club, he has loved roses all his life and has been a member of the Royal National Rose Society since he was eleven years old. He has grown and exhibited roses for many years and is extremely knowledgeable. Ron gave a very engaging and informative talk about roses, covering many topics, including the various categories of roses, naming protocols, and roses differing growth habits and suitability for planting locations. Ron also gave advice on transplanting and pruning roses. There were many questions for Ron, and his answers were eagerly welcomed. Irene then gave a very brief demonstration of a technique for propagating roses that she had found on the internet, which involves planting a rose stem in a potato buried in a pot of compost! Buds had begun to form after a few weeks on one of the stems she brought in to show the members. Many people seemed very keen to try this for themselves! John Howes gave members further advice about feeding and growing on the bulbs that are being grown for the competition in the spring. This is a most interesting topic, John explained about the correct timings for different types of feed and how these feeds help the plant to develop good leaves and flowers. The competition this month was in two categories, the first for a bunch of flowers from members’ gardens and the second for a dried arrangement, there were many entries in the latter category, all of a very high standard. There was then the usual raffle of plants and the usual Question and Answer Time. December meeting The next meeting will be held at Bar Trasgu, Calle Alicante 12, Formentera del Segura, on Monday 7th December at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start. This will be the Christmas meeting and will have a festive format! Members will bring along Christmas food to share and there will be the eagerly awaited and contested Christmas Quiz. There will also be an extended raffle with a Christmas theme, members may donate prizes to the raffle if they wish.
If you are interested in gardening and would like to come along to the meeting, please do so, you will be most welcome. For further information, please contact The Vega Baja Garden Club at

Legion Open Day in La Marina
The Royal British Legion held an Open Day at The Posh Club in La Marina on 10th November. The aim of the day was to reach out to and inform British residents and visitors in the area of The Legion and its local Branch of Gran Alacant and La Marina which covers Gran Alacant, La Marina, Santa Pola, Guardamar and inland to Dolores. The event was well attended with many new members coming forward and our Welfare Coordinator, Pam, was kept busy dealing with Welfare enquiries.
A Legion spokesperson said “We were delighted with the number attending this local event which gave us the opportunity to talk to a lot of people. Those who
came in from other areas were given details of their local Legion Branches. The Posh Club was an ideal venue for this event and our thanks go to the manager, Peter, for his support and assistance with the day”. “The Legion is involved with a great many different areas including campaigning and lobbying the Government, including the Insult to Injury Campaign (Veterans injured during Service can lose most of their compensation to cover the cost of their social care) and helping those military veterans suffering from Asbestos cancer. (who can be left thousands of pounds worse off than their civilian contemporaries). We are also the custodians of Remembrance, which will have been seen from the many ceremonies taking place around the 11th November. The Legion’s website show all the different facets of Legion work –
