Female Focus Aches and pains
In the colder months we start to notice aches and pains, a few stiff joints, and an underlying need to get cosy and warm and relax. Well our elder pets like just the same things, so here are a few tips and some advice on how to keep our pets cosy and pain free! Sometimes it can be very difficult to tell if your pet is in pain as they hide it well, I hope this helps clear up any doubts.
If you have an elderly dog or a dog that has had a trauma injury, it is advisable that when winter come their joints are assessed, a few simple checks can determine whether your animals has any aches or pains, and with this information we can make a program to prevent those aches and pains bothering your beloved pet.
There are a few symptoms that you as owners can see that will indicate that your pet may be in discomfort, these include limping, struggling to get from their bed, being more reluctant to jump up or to go up and down stairs. All of these symptoms indicate that your pet has pain, and would benefit greatly with treatment once the main issue has been addressed.
Here are some tips on what to do if you think your pet is suffering with aches and pains. Once the problem has been diagnosed, apart from medication that will be prescribed by a qualified veterinary surgeon, there are a still things we can do to make it easier for our pets. Firstly DO NOT self medicate your pet, use the dosages and timelines given to you as well as the correct medication, keep your pet warm and dry, make sure they are not overweight as this can cause extra pressure on the joints and cause further damage and further pain, do the exercises your veterinary surgeon advised.
At home we can help our pet with some simple changes around the house and garden to make their life easier. Firstly if it is a larger dog, raise their food and water bowl so they don’t have to tilt their heads down, relieving pressure to their spine and neck. Secondly, make sure they can access their bed easily without too much climbing in or out, or even change the dog bed as there are some fantastic orthopaedic dog beds, made with memory foam with helps relive a lot of pain. If you have a smaller pet you can make little steps for them to use to get up on those places that they cannot reach anymore, even if they can when they’re on pain relief medication, these will help to prevent further injury. And the last bit of advice is when you are taking your pet for a walk remember that they often can’t walk as far as they could and would like a gentle stroll rather than a marathon.
