FF - Now in our 23rd year!

A year ago Joanne O’Donovan had the vision to set up a Mobility Shop come Home Care Centre and fill a gap that was desperately needed in the market, not just in Javea but also up and down the coast. One year on, and both Jo and the shop are thriving!
Parasol Care Centre’s First Birthday!
“It has been hard work but thoroughly worth it” says Jo. “We have an excellent team of carers on our register now, we are helping to plug the gaps in the Spanish system which leave many elderly British expats confused and not receiving the proper treatments they need, and we are helping them to remain in their homes and receive the right assistance.” Parasol Care offers practical assistance to enable the elderly, ill or those returning from hospital, to continue to live independently in their own homes. Run in the style of a UK Home Care service as much as possible, they will organise nurses, carers, and companions for short or long-term assistance. And from the showroom in the heart of Javea they offer for sale or rental a variety of mobility and independent living aids.
Left to right are Jo, Richard Sykes of Premier Hearing Services who sees clients at Parasol Care Centre by appointment, and Laura.
Now working with Jo in the showroom is Laura whose background is a carer and she is studying to be a nurse. When questioned about learnings from the first year here are a few of their top tips:
Please introduce the client to us earlier. With a condition such as Alzheimer’s it is vital for the nurses or carers to get to know the individual before the illness becomes too advanced. With knowledge of their routines, their likes and dislikes, their ways and interests and their past lives, we can help them to continue as they always have done, and to stimulate them in ways which they will find useful. Mental activity is key in helping them remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Drugs and dosages need to be regularly checked. We have seen cases where perhaps because of shortage of time, or because of the language barrier, extra drugs have been prescribed for a particular current ailment which may conflict with other drugs the patient is already taking. We will help to reassess what drugs and medications are being prescribed overall, and come to the Doctor’s appointment also to ensure a proper review is undertaken. Proper food and drinks are key. ‘You are what you eat’ is true at any stage of life; and it is extremely important that the elderly keep eating properly, and our carers ensure that clients receive meals on time and of the right type. And now in our showroom we have a tasty variety of Aloe Vera drinks, supplements, gels and teas which offer superb nutritional value, are full of vitamins, and easy to consume. Exclusive to us, these come in a whole variety of flavours such as ‘Berry Nectar’, ‘Bits and Peaches’ and ‘Exotic Fruits’. Attendance Allowance is attainable here in Spain. Back in March’s magazine we described how you can obtain this UK allowance. Every single one of the applications we put forward was successful in obtaining the allowance, meaning that the individuals concerned have approximately 100€ per week more disposable income to spend on homecare, a gardener, transport....or whatever they wish.
You can find the article on the Female Focus website, or come and see us at Avenida del Pla in Javea (near Specsavers) or call 965 793 299 to book an appointment. Appointments are necessary because with (potentially) 52 pages of the application form to be completed, time needs to be allotted to each applicant.
