Ok, so it’s not a real medical condition, but we do see the effects of it regularly at the garage. What we’re talking about is leaving your feet on one of the pedals unnecessarily. Your car has 3 pedals, so let’s look at why it’s with thinking about.

First of the, your clutch. You’d be amazed at how many people rest their left foot on the clutch pedal. They think it’s doing nothing but in reality it’s causing the clutch to be ever so slightly engaged. Only recently we changed an entire clutch system which had burnt out purely because the driver habitually rested his foot on his clutch. It’s expensive and avoidable.

Next brakes. You’d be surprised just how much the compression in your engine can slow you down. Yet we still see people who bring their car in with worn brakes way before normal. We’re not suggesting you don’t use your brakes, but easing off the gas a little earlier when for example running up to red lights, and allowing the car to start the slowing process by itself will not only be easier on your brakes, but is actually a less stressful way to drive. Worst case scenario we’ve seen is burnt out brakes in an automatic car where the driver had one foot on the gas with another on the brakes. It’s OK if you’re a formula 1 driver, not so clever for everyday use.

And finally the gas pedal. We sometimes get complaints that a car is too thirsty. We check it out and find nothing wrong and then watch the driver drive off at maximum revs. Well, if you keep your foot hard on the gas, of course you’re going to use more fuel.

Of course, at Larry’s we’ll always be happy to change your clutch or brakes, and do a diagnostic, but ask yourself if you could actually drive a little gentler and a little more mindfully.

We’re sure if you do we’ll see less of you for repairs, and more of you when a service is required. For sure you’ll save money and prolong the life of your vehicle. Until next month, drive safely!
