Implants at Clínica Dental el Puerto, What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small strong post made from biocompatible materials which may be metal or ceramic. The implant is placed in the jaw to take the place of a missing tooth and acts as the foundation for the tooth.

We use titanium for our implants, which is nontoxic and allows good integration with the bone to provide excellent support. Titanium is used in many medical applications, including medical instruments, implants and prosthesis, e.g. hip joints. The surface of our implants are sand blasted and acid etched to provide a roughened surface that allows the bone to easily combine with the implant and to provide stable support. They also have micro rings, a dual thread and spiral channels cut in them to

increase surface area and aid integration.

How is an implant placed? We have an in-house maxillofacial surgeon who places our implants, Dr. Ignacio Solís García, who has many years experience of placing implants in the mouth and has extensive surgical knowledge. After careful planning, the implants are placed under a local anaesthetic and allowed to bond to the surrounding bone (osseo integration). After 2-3 months an x-ray is taken to determine the degree of support achieved. Once happy with the support, arrangements are made to uncover and restore the implant, either with individual crowns, bridges or an implant retained denture. We use the best quality materials and first class laboratories to fabricate your final restoration, giving you an excellent result and the smile you desire.

What are the advantages of a dental implant? · Reduced bone loss compared to other treatment modalities. · Improved function. The structure and function of dental implants mimics your own teeth thereby allowing you to eat the foods you want and speak with complete confidence. · Longevity. High success rates mean that with careful care and good dental hygiene, dental implants can last many years. · Great aesthetics. By placing the implant carefully and with attention to detail, dental implants imitate life with a natural appearance providing you with the smile you are looking for.
