Weekly Craft Fair in Jávea starts once again - now two days a week
From the 31st October onwards, you can once again enjoy visiting a small but attractive craft market every week. This time not only on Saturday mornings in the square of the Post Office (Plaza Marina Alta) in the old town, but also every Sunday morning on the sea front near the harbour (at the end of the Avenida Jaime I).
This autumn between 10 and 15 stalls will set up in both places to sell work made by hand by the people on the stalls. That’s what Artesanía de Autor means - real craftwork made by dedicated people.
Walk by the stalls, look at the work and talk to the people who spend their week working at their craft. Leather, silk, bone, wood, clay, paper - all are used to make handbags, hair pins, jewelry, toys, lamps and many other delightful and original items. Some practical, others just decorative. Think of this craft market as an art gallery in the street, with each artist at his stall. This is where you can buy items which you will never see in a shop, items made with the love and attention to detail which is so often missing from mass-produced goods.
Every week the group will be a little different. Some of the people will travel to other parts of Spain for a weekend fair elsewhere, while others cannot make enough goods in one week to replace what they sell. All participants bring their tools along, ready to make small alterations or accept special orders that can be made on the spot, or prepared to be picked up in a week or two weeks time. A list of people at any given weekend will be posted on
www.amata.es (in English and Spanish). At http://www.
amata.es/JaveaPuerto%2015.html you can take a look at the type and quality of goods in the fair in the port last month.
The fair at the post office is there every Saturday from the 31st of October and opens from 11am to 2pm; in the port the stalls set up from the 1st of November, every Sunday from 11am; they will stay open until about 3 or 4pm, because many people like to
stroll along the sea front before or after their Sunday lunch in one of the many restaurants in this lively part of town. For more information (also in English) please call 639 979 678.

The Calpe and Benissa Lions Charity Shop
The charity shop, on Calle Pintor Sorrolla, Calpe has raised just in excess of 30,000€ since it opened December 2014 all of which goes towards good causes as the Lions are a non-profit making organisation.
All volunteers offer their help at the shop without being reimbursed for expenses or their time and the Lions themselves put a great deal of effort and time into events that raise money.
Each and every month a donation of 250€ is given to Caritas Benissa and 250€ to Caritas Calpe as well as 250€ each month to Calpe Ayuda. The Calpe and Benissa Lions also contribute to Gargasindi School Calpe, Emaus Benissa and Calpe, Red Cross as well as “one-off” donations to other organisations in need.
Being a Lion is very worthwhile and offers a lot of satisfaction especially when you see the good that is achieved from the money that is raised. This year Calpe and Benissa Lions are looking to recruit new members, if you think you are the type of person that would like to help and also benefit from being involved in all the social activities the Lions have to offer then you can go along to a meeting just to see if it is your ‘cup of tea’ and to get a flavour of what they do.
