Stepping Stones At the recent regular meeting of

‘Stepping Stones’, a member of the group asked if he could share a quote based on Henri J M Nouwen’s book, ‘Out of Solitude’, which he felt was an apt description of the empathy and

sympathetic understanding of the Listeners 24 hour Helpline and its Bereavement/Loss group.

“When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing or not healing, but face with us the reality of our powerlessness. That is a person who cares”. ‘Stepping Stones’ meets once a month with a support team from the ‘Listeners’. For dates, venues and any other enquiries, contact the dedicated ‘phone line 634 362 498. This is an initiative from the ‘Listeners’ Registered Charity, which has dealt with a number of such challenges through its 24hr Helpline, 965 99 66 78. As with the Helpline, there is no necessity to reveal any personal details, and all conversations are conducted in an atmosphere of understanding and agreed confidentiality. Talk to us ...... we care!

Do you live in the Calpe/ Moraira area? Can you help?

Many of you will be aware of the wonderful and valuable work being done by HELP here on the Costa Blanca, from interpreting and visiting services at Denia Hospital to fundraising in our two charity shops in La Xara and Moraira, as well as medical equipment loan.

Of course none of this would be possible without our committed volunteers who give their time to help those in need. However, we are currently experiencing a shortage of volunteers particularly in the areas of Calpe and Moraira/ Teulada. If you think you can spare a little of your time to help others (whether it is home visits, shopping, help with transport etc) then we would be delighted to hear from you. Please ring our office in La Xara (96 642 7044) Monday-Friday 10am -2pm to find out more. They may put you in touch with our local co-ordinators in Calpe and Moraira who will be happy to have a chat and tell you a little more about how you can help. We are always in need of more volunteers – wherever you are – so however little time you can spare we would be delighted to hear from you!

Teulada Moraira Lions need your paperbacks!!

T.M. Lions long-established bookstall at Moraira Market has, this year, had a particularly busy summer - to the extent where it is almost a victim of its own success as stocks run low and a dearth of good quality “as new” used paperbacks is causing some concern to, and a deal of head scratching by Lion, John Hughes, under whose command, the bookstall is a well-oiled machine - you know the kind, where there always seem to be a few unidentifiable bits left over after you’ve put it all together! And so, if anyone out there is having a general clear-out, or if you are a landlord and have found that your holiday renters have left behind a stash of murder mysteries, bodice rippers etc., or if for any other reason you have a supply of good quality paperback books which are surplus to requirements and which you are willing to donate to a good cause, then John would be delighted to hear from you.

Please either bring your books to the Teulada Moraira Lions Bookstall in Moraira Market (we are there on the first and third Fridays of every month) or, if you would prefer T.M. Lions to collect the donated books from you, simply contact John by phone on 965 747 813 and he will be delighted to arrange a convenient time for this to be done.
