We’ve got the numbers!

Noise, not age is the leading cause of hearing loss. Many years ago the people who most suffered from hearing loss were returning soldiers from the wars, or workers from the mines. These days many people suffering from hearing loss have been involved with the use of heavy machinery like pneumatic drills or from listening to portable music devices with the volume too loud.

What causes Hearing Loss and how can new technology really help the situation?

The ears are fragile instruments. When sound waves enter the ear, they cause the eardrum to vibrate. The vibrations are transmitted to the cochlea, in the inner ear, where fluid carries them to neatly organised rows of hair cells. These in turn stimulate auditory nerve fibres, each attuned to a different frequency. These impulses travel via the auditory nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted as, say, words, music or an approaching vehicle. Damage to this delicate apparatus results from both volume and length of exposure to sound. Very loud noises, or chronic exposure to sound even when it is not particularly loud, can wreak havoc on the hair cells, causing them to become disarranged and to degenerate. This is the important part: We are born with a fixed number of hair cells; once they are dead, they cannot be replaced, and auditory sensitivity is permanently lost. Think of a field of corn. If the corn gets trampled upon, it falls flat and is no longer able to wave about. The hairs in the ear are the same, once killed off they do not regrow. The Good News: With today’s modern advancements in hearing aid technology, there is no reason to “just put up” with hearing loss anymore.

Not only are today´s hearing aids slimmer, lighter and smaller than ever before, they even come in funky colours.

Also, performance-wise they are a great improvement on those previously available. Over the coming months we will investigate the different types of hearing aids and their benefits and features in detail. For example did you know that when you answer the telephone some hearing aids will automatically turn down the volume of the hearing aid in the other ear by 30%, thus cutting out a lot of the background nose in that ear, and making it much easier to hear in

the ear with the receiver? Clever new features like this abound. There are many advancements in the latest hearing aids that we commonly do not know, which we are going to inform you about over the coming months.
