Female Focus Dental wear: Causes, prevention and treatment - Part 2

Last month we looked at the causes and effects of dental wear and bruxism (grinding). This month we will look at how worn away teeth can be treated. The treatment of dental wear should always be preceded by a proper diagnosis by a specialist using an appropriate clinical history which will allow us to detect the possible causes of the wear. X-rays will inform us about the state of the roots of the teeth and if there is any decay. And a proper periodontal examination will show up any potential problems such as periodontitis. These studies will definitively show the full extent of the wear on the teeth, and help to determine the most appropriate method of treatment.

In more advanced cases, treatment will require the use of larger ceramic veneers which completely restore the front surfaces of the teeth and at the same time will protect them from future problems.

In wear caused by bruxism (grinding), the treatment will also depend upon the extent of the wear. In mild cases where not too much of the tooth has been worn away, again a reconstruction of the tooth may be appropriate together with the use of a tooth guard.

In cases where wear has been caused by an excessive intake of acidic drinks or foods, or by brushing the teeth using a hard toothbrush and using too much force, if only the front surfaces of the teeth are affected sometimes it is enough to use small veneers or composite fillings if the scuffs are small and do not affect a large part of the tooth.

In more advanced cases, and especially in cases where the height of the lower third of the face has been reduced, treatment can be effected through the reconstruction of the teeth and replacement of the facial height through the use of single crowns or ceramic bridges also with the use of a tooth guard to prevent future wear of these crowns. In very advanced cases, where there is virtually no tooth structure left, the use of periodontal surgery will be required to extend the size of the teeth prior to placement of the crowns, in order to get the best results in the long run.

With this type of tooth reconstruction the height of the bottom third of the face can be regained, thus rejuvenating our appearance, and with the size and the colour of the teeth being individually selected, so that we will also achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.
