ANOTHeR sTeP TOWARDs AN INDOOR sWIMMING POOL FOR DARTMOuTH

THE REALITY OF HAVING AN INDOOR POOL FOR DARTMOUTH AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES, CAME ONE STEP CLOSER AT THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER WHEN THE FIRST TURF WAS CUT. Watched by an enthusiastic crowd, Kier Construction and the Pool Trustees, marked the first steps in a 10 month building programme. Lee Westward, aged 10, who requires aqua therapy to aid his recovery from a rare childhood hip complaint, was thrilled to be invited to cut the first turf. It has been a very long journey to get to this stage.

The dedicated team of Trustees and pool supporters have worked on the project for over 10 years. Despite many set backs, the group has raised funds, negotiated with countless organisations and finally succeeded in getting the project underway. Jackie Veale, a former Olympic swimmer and a

trustee for several years spoke of her delight in seeing the build actually get underway, “I am so pleased, looking around at all the young people here, knowing that they will have the opportunity to learn to swim in their own town. It is such an important skill, both for their social lives, but possibly even life saving.” After the ceremony, the guests, including representatives from South Hams, Devon CC,

and the Dartmouth Mayor, were invited to the outdoor pool, to watch aqua displays by clubs and organisations. The spectators were treated to canoe rescues, life saving, aquafit, water polo and sub aqua. Once the indoor pool opens, these activities will be

available all the year round which great news for people who want to learn and practice new skills in the safety of a warm environment. Rob Clements from the RLNI emphasised the importance of knowing how to swim, particularly in a coastal town. The new pool is to be built to Amateur Swimming

Association standards. It will be a 25m, four lane pool with a learner pool and fully meet the Disability Discrimination Act by providing access for all. It is hoped that it will be completed by next September in time for the new academic year. Having successfully raised the funding for the build,

the Trustees are now concentrating on raising funds to ensure that the pool is equipped to the highest standards.
