Welcome to this month’s Dart Harbour bulletin
Rob Giles, Harbourmaster
SUMMER ROUND-UP It’s been another busy season here at Dart Harbour with visitor numbers up and many rallies and cruises choosing to make us their destination. Visitors have been keen to make the most of Dart Harbour’s nearby attractions while also enjoying the beauty and tranquillity of the river.
some of the key highlights were:
Dartmouth Royal Regatta Dart Harbour was delighted at the success of this year’s Dartmouth Regatta. Dart Harbour staff worked tirelessly over long hours to ensure the safety of river users in what is the busiest week of the year on the water. As ever, the event produced some superb competition and exceptional entertainment. It was very pleasing to see our
safety advice was heeded and water users responding to harbour staff instructions with many positive comments received. We are particularly pleased our
safety measures and planning helped save a 70-year-old man’s life after he fell into the water having slipped in the Double steps stairwell and knocked his head. With the gentleman unconscious in the water, Dart Harbour staff - there by pre-arrangement - were quick to pull him out of the water and provide first aid. We are already looking forward
to next year’s events and the opportunity to create some more great memories.
The luxuriously appointed five star
sea Cloud II was followed by the MV Hebridean Princess – the only cruise ship to be chartered by the royal family in July on a very successful visit. Dartmouth has also hosted several other notable vessels this season including the SV Kaskelot in June, the Tall Ship Pelican and TS Royalist. Hopefully the weather will cooperate more next year when we provisionally have seven cruise ship calls booked.
Dart Harbour Investment We’ve received some great feedback on our new facilities, in particular the Kingswear Tender Rack Pontoon and Rack Facility, Town Jetty and
Cruise Ships unfortunately, bad weather prevented two of the planned cruise ships from visiting Dartmouth this season. With winds gusting up to 40mph off the south Hams coast, Dartmouth missed out on its first cruise ship of the season, the MV Amadea in May which was carrying around 600 mostly German passengers. In June MV Berlin’s visit was also
cancelled by the Captain due to a delay in the ship’s schedule in respect of bad weather earlier in the cruise. However, later in the month, the
spectacular Sea Cloud II (pic. below) did pay a visit to Dartmouth having last visited the port in 2009.
middle Deepwater Visitor’s Pontoon which were replaced at the start of the season. The Town Jetty has proved very popular with our visitors and commercial users with the new design freeing up more space for mooring. Other investment has been in our on-the-water payment system allowing visitors to pay by card.
Waiting Lists Also over the summer, Dart Harbour has completed an extensive audit of waiting lists and customer records and is now moving forward on the allocation of berths for next season. If any customers haven’t kept their contact details up to date, please do get in touch and let us have your latest details. Looking forward, if any mooring holders intend to lift out for the winter, please could you let us know as this will enable us to allocate our winter moorings. In addition, if you would like to give up your Dart Harbour berth, please let us know as soon as possible and by December 31 at the latest. Otherwise you could still be liable for charges. And if you are leaving your
boat in the water over the winter season, do remember to check your mooring lines to ensure they are fit for purpose. Also, furling headsails should be taken off to prevent damage and vessels should be pumped out if necessary. If you have any issues of concerns, do pop into the office to see us, our door is always open or tel. 01803 832337
