simon Drew Three Years Hard Labour
“Three Years Hard Labour” is the title of Simon Drew`s exhibition of work as part of the Dartmouth Galleries Festival this October. It’s a selection of pieces that he has worked on for the last 3 years. This collection will include originals from his latest three books: “Golf: Fairway Fables”, “The Wisdom of Wine” and “Fowl, Fleas and Fancy Fauna”. The son of avid golfers, Simon restricted his own enthusiasm for the sport to that of spectator and depicter of its scenes and some of its endearingly absurd possibilities. As for wine – he is a dedicated imbiber and attributes some of his more inspired artistic moments to the grape varieties of St Emilion. Animals, of course, the subject of his latest book, have always been of interest to him and, before turning to art full time, he studied zoology at Exeter University. Simon specialises in pen and ink drawings in fine detail.
The subjects are often still lifes of an unusual kind. He likes to put objects or creatures into incongruous contexts and to observe the almost surreal result this produces. He doesn’t cartoonise: his animals are represented with accuracy, despite anthropomorphising them.
Humour is often present, but Simon also produces work
of serious intent. He tries to provoke new ways of looking at things. “Three Years Hard Labour” will be thoughtful as well as witty. (Simon also has pictures in Coombe Gallery’s food-themed show.)
This will be our second Dartmouth Galleries Art Event since opening last November, and we look forward to greeting you with wine and nibbles on the Preview evening, Friday 16th October 6 – 9pm. Our show this year includes work by Jan Phethean, a member of the St Ives and Penwith Society of Artists, the beautiful pastel landscapes of Wendy McBride, and new work by the painter Malcolm Taylor, who was so popular with you last year. We will also feature silkscreen prints by Breon O’Casey, a Celtic Artist who was, for a while, an assistant to Barbara Hepworth when he first arrived in St Ives with his family. Since his death at the age of 83 in 2011 his prints have proved to be very collectable. Also included will be a selection of prints by Eileen Cooper RA, who is the first woman Keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. We will have sculpture by William Cramer and Frana Favata and jewellery by Roberta Hopkins and Anne Farag and much, much more. The Flavel Arts Centre will be hosting ‘Artists’ and
Makers’ Tales’ as part of the Dartmouth Galleries Festival on Wednesday 28th at 7.30pm, with maker Lynn Muir and artist Connor McIntyre talking about their very different artistic journeys. We are pleased to announce that we will have some of Connor’s highly innovative work on view in the gallery during this time.
