Heather Betts from Dartmouth Computing HELPS US STAY TECH SAVVY Move Over Lollipop - Marshmallow is Coming

oogle has announced that the latest version of their operating system will be called Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As with

all Android upgrades, it will be free to all users of compatible Android smartphone and Tablets. so what’s new in the latest version?

It won’t look too different on the surface but there are plenty of new features behind the scenes. “Google Now” Understands Context We have been able to “Ask Google” questions for some time. The voice recognition feature has come of age in Marshmallow with a new app called “Google Now on Tap”. Google Now understands more than 100 million different contexts. so if you are listening to a piece of music and ask Google Now, “how old is he?” Google Now will know the artist you are talking about. Google Now wants to be able to answer questions like “When is my flight?” “What’s their last album?” and “How long does it take to get there?”

Power Saving and Faster Charging Most users will be pleased to know that there is a new feature to preserve battery life called “Doze”. Your device will use motion detection to realise when

it hasn’t moved for an extended period of time and switches to a deeper sleep which consumes much less power. As well as making our batteries last longer, Android Marshmallow also brings faster charging to the fore with usB-C support. Google claims devices with usB-C connectors will charge three to five times faster than the current microusB offerings on the market.

Backup and Security Marshmallow introduces a simple line bar that shows how much storage space you have on your device with a breakdown of what is using up your internal storage. Marshmallow will also standardise support for fingerprint sensors.

Not only will these be used to unlock

and secure your phone but they tie in nicely with the new Android Pay mobile payments system. With auto backup and restore, your phone will automatically backup app data and settings with a file size of 25MB or less.

Check with the manufacturer of your phone or tablet to see whether it is compatible - or simply “ask Google”. The upgrade is expected within weeks and will be well worth it.
