INSPIRED BY THE DART Right: Pontoon and water , Dittisham.

Below: Walk along the Shore, Dittisham. Both by Nagib Karsan

Nagib Karsan N

agib Karsan is a painter well known for capturing the south West and

has increasingly turned his talents to capturing the Dart and its surrounds: “Having travelled and painted extensively around Devon and the West Country, I’ve recently been draw more and more to the Dart which has so many iconic views. The cascading hillsides, eclectic architecture and busy river life lend themselves particularly well to my style. Favourite spots at the moment include Dittisham Quay (not least for the FBI!) which I’ve been exploring in works which interpret both familiar and less familiar views. The river mouth at Dartmouth is fantastic to use as an instantly recognisable backdrop

in paintings that are semi abstract in approach; there is no mistaking the curve of the banks of the Dart plunging to the waterline. I’ve always enjoyed painting harbourside scenes with their jumble of boats, people and buildings. Dartmouth gives rise to so many interesting shapes and textures which have inspired me to further explore and

develop my technique. Above all my work is about playfulness, a theme to which the relaxed culture of the Dart lends itself perfectly.” The images are of two recent Dittisham paintings (‘Walk along the shore Dittisham’ and ‘Pontoon and waterfront Dittisham’) which are each now available as limited editions.

in a brief, glorious passage of time. The banks of the trees, running down to the water’s edge, reveal hidden shades of greys, greens, purples and browns, merging from shade to light. Where exposed on tidal stretches, the mud flats reflect the colour of the sky and mingle with bright green exposed weed. I was particularly taken by the views of Tuckenhay at low tide. Moored boats, cream painted buildings and a sky with floating fluffy clouds all added to a wonderful day of sketching and consigning the colours of the day to memory. I know that my return to this wonderful Devon

river will be sooner rather than later and hope that I have captured the pure beauty of the area and that my images portray a small part of its glory.”
