AROUND KINGSWEAR Around Kingswear NEwS FRoM THE SUNNY SIDE

NCI – AFTER TEN During the weekend of 16/17th August the National Coastwatch Initiative at Froward Point notched-up its tenth anniversary of keeping watch on our nearby coast for the safety of all of us who put to sea, be it in a canoe or a vast tanker. The weekend celebrations were blessed with warm and pleasant weather and a goodly number of folk braved the walk to the remote and beautiful spot where the WW11 buildings house the Coastwatch people. Some toddled down from the Brownstone car park, which is a fair step down to the coast, but some toiled all the way from

Kingswear – a stiff walk as I can attest. There was plenty to see and do and the cakes and other goodies were a

great accompaniment to tea and coffee for the weary walkers. Hopefully the event will have spread awareness of what the volunteer group does week in and week out when we are little aware of it. I am told that the weekend raised £267. In addition Jan Trevorrow, representing the Kingswear Regatta Committee, was happy to present the Coastwatch Initiative with a cheque for £350 which was their allotted share from the takings at this year’s Kingswear Regatta. This goes towards the cost of a new generator. During the installation of the generator and all its ancillaries the Froward Point weather station and webcam of Start Bay has been absent all summer from their website and it has been much missed by local sailors and visitors from all over the country - see http:// www.nci-frowardpoint.org.uk/weather.htm

PROUD OF OUR ARTIST The Flavel in Dartmouth is host to a very special and splendid exhibition by Susanne Lowery-Smith, or Sue Smith as we normally know her. She is a Kingwear resident from Higher Contour Road. Sue’s pictures vary from really wonderful charcoal portraits, which take your breath away, to aquatint prints and sophisticated figure drawings of real quality. Sue is very happy to take commissions and I urge you to go along to see her

work, and take your

cheque book with you! While we

were there at the preview two pictures were sold in minutes. Well

done that Kingswear girl!

ROWING FEAT... August 9th was a great day for the ladies of Kingswear Rowing Club when they showed-up the men by rowing from Darthaven to Tuckenhay and back. The softy men manned the rescue boats, several of them, and helped to drink the beer. One boat was the sort of boat- equivalent of the

hospitality tent. This is quite a distance to row and the ladies were only a bit frayed

around the edges by the time they returned to Darthaven. I reckon they must have rowed about 16 miles in total which is pretty impressive in my book. The day was reasonably kind to us, in that totally lack-lustre way which 2015’s August had, in that it did not actually snow and was more or less daylight in the afternoon. More than that we did not dare hope. There are two more rows planned for the season, one to Newfoundland Cove and round the Mewstone on Saturday 19th Sept and another Rally to Galmpton for fish and chips on 26th Sept. Both of these will probably have happened by the time you read this, weather permitting. All power to the rowers’ elbows .... and knees and any other bits under scrutiny.
