The PowerBoat 5CTR brings an unprecedented level of

accuracy and realism to the boat race experience. Cruden has applied the same, detailed modelling approach to wave and boat dynamics and professional image generation as the industry has come to expect from its race car simulators. “The PowerBoat comes in at a lower price point than our

previous simulators,” Kalff added. “You can fit five people in the boat and the duration of the ride is also shorter, giving a great ROI for operators of all sizes.”

Cross-border competition By their very nature, porous borders work both ways

– and as Dutch attractions operators welcome visitors from outside the Netherlands, they also wave goodbye to Dutch consumers who are being pulled away to different countries. With this in mind, Dutch attractions business owners have been refining their offering and improving their experiences in an effort to ensure they stay ahead of the game.

“We find that it is becoming more and more

important to really distinguish yourself,” said Jurgens, who discussed Efteling’s strategy in 2015. “To stay on the wish list of consumers, experience and storytelling are essential – and,

luckily, 52 InterPark January–February 2015 that is exactly where our roots lie. Our ambition is to stay independent and

autonomous in the future and therefore we need to grow in visitor numbers. We will continue to invest; next year we will open our Dive Coaster Baron 1898 and expand Efteling Village Bosrijk.” Interestingly, the recent economic downturn may have

helped some operators in the Netherlands, as cash- strapped consumers opt for domestic holidays. Jan Bos, vice-president of international marketing for Maxxtracks, an indoor ski slope supplier and operator, explained how the ‘staycation’ trend has been a boon for the Dutch attractions industry. “People would love to go to the snow in the mountains,

but it’s quite expensive to travel to Austria or Switzerland in the winter time,” he said. “People are also becoming increasingly aware that, if they go skiing, they should prepare themselves physically for the snow.” Maxxtracks has installed more than 150 of its innovative

indoor ski slopes around the world, with more than 50 of these being in the Netherlands. “The slopes are used by beginners with zero experience as well as by Olympic skiers,” Bos said. “The slopes are used to improve both ski technique as well as physical conditions. As the surface speed as well as the angle of the slope can be changed instantly, it can be set to meet the training level of first time skiers or snowboarders and up to the level of the World Cup.”
