automatic dosing: “Manual dosing of chemicals directly into a commercial pool presents a number of risks.
“Most chemicals for water treatment are hazardous to health, and therefore come under the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations. COSHH regulations require an assessment of risks to be done so that they may be controlled, exposure to the substance minimised, and that operations do
not pose a hazard to the health of the operator or to anyone in the vicinity.
“Manual additions of pool chemical means exposure to the operator carrying out the dosing, and to anyone else in the vicinity. It is best to confine the chemical to the pool chemical store or area and dose the product/s into the circulation system in the plant room. “Safer, more efficient use of chemical is achieved where the dosing of chemicals is continuous and satisfactory water quality is more easily maintained. It is usually more economic too, as with manual dosing over and under dosing is common with the resulting waste of chemical. Overdosing gives uncomfortable conditions for bathing with possibly bleached costumes, skin/eye irritation etc., whereas under dosing can allow organic pollutants to survive. “As the pool is being used, any chlorine in the pool is dissipated by the bathers and the pH will change. In order to maintain satisfactory hygienic conditions it is necessary to replace that lost chlorine and control the pH as quickly as possible. This cannot be achieved by manual additions.”
LUTZ-JESCO – A LONG HISTORY IN DOSING PUMPS

St. Tropez on the Mediterranean coast of France is a paradise for some, but for pool management it presents a challenging set of issues. The hot summer temperatures drive outdoor pool water temperatures well into the 30s. Warm mistral winds can evaporate hundreds of litres off the surface in a few hours changing chemical concentrations. Thunderstorms and flash floods can have the opposite effect. So when retirees Nigel and Stephanie Cole from the UK, finished construction of their holiday villa they sought a pool management solution that could cope with the toughest conditions and could also be left for many weeks while the villa was vacant. After a long search they eventually settled on the Intellidoser 201 from PoolPerfect. “We chose the Intellidoser because it seemed to offer the high precision measurement of expensive commercial pool systems, but was available for the same price as a low cost system,” says Nigel. “Our neighbours had tried low cost dosers with mixed results so we were a little nervous at the start.” The Intellidoser was installed in the poolroom by Nigel in a few hours. pH and ORP probes were inserted into the

pumping line. The twin peristaltic pumps add HCl 35% (hydrochloric acid) as pH minus and sodium hypochlorite 14% as liquid chlorine sanitiser, both of which are readily available at pool suppliers in local towns, for around 15 euros for a 20 litre container.
“The results
are superb,” says Nigel. “Both
pH and chlorine are maintained absolutely rock solid day to day,
for the entire year”. “At the start of each season, I perform a general check of the water chemistry, typically correcting
the CYA manually, and from thereon I leave it entirely to the automatic system.”

“It’s fantastic,” says Nigel. “I can be back in the UK and I receive a text message from my pool a thousand miles away, showing me the precise condition of the water. Furthermore the system will also tell me when the 20 litre chemical containers are becoming
