FILTERS & FILTER MEDIA

Filtration For All Applications

Available in many forms and guises, filters and filter media are without doubt one of the most important factors that make up an efficient water cleansing system. Thanks to improved technologies, which have increased performance, they’re also now the first place to start looking when it comes to combining effective water management and cost savings. We take a closer look at the available products in this competitive sector By Andrea Hartshorne

hen it comes to filters and filter media, there’s plenty of choice on offer and buyers can often be left confused as to the right

solution, but thankfully there’s a fantastic selection of suppliers on hand to offer advice and guidance.

Peter Hogg of Magnum Filters says: “Over the years I have heard many arguments for and against using cartridge filters for swimming pool filtration and which is the best filtering media to use in a cartridge. “Recently cartridge filtration for swimming pools has become more and more common especially in the USA and Australia. One of the main reasons is water conservation. Cartridges cannot be backwashed and have to be cleaned with a hose which takes far less water than the normal backwash.”

MAGNUM – CARTRIDGE FILTERS FOR POOLS AND SPAS

Magnum Filters, is a NZ company that has been manufacturing cartridge filters for pools and spas since 1982. Peter Hogg is the owner of Spaeuro which supplies the UK and European market with Magnum cartridge filters. With the advent of the large 400-600 square foot cluster cartridges such as the Pentair, Hayward and Astral units, the cleaning generally only has to take place once a year or even longer. This is because the surface area is so great and the flow going through the filters are so much slower than one stand-alone cartridge.

On a standard cartridge which uses Reemay fabric for its filtering media the nominal micron rating is around 30 microns. However after the cartridge has collected dirt and debris, a dirt cake forms on the outside of the fabric. This dirt cake can then become a further filtering mechanism which results in finer filtration. It is conceivable that the micron rating can go down to as low as 3-5 microns. With the added advantage of having

a large surface area you end up with a very efficient filter unit which maintains adequate flow that requires very little maintenance. Pleated cartridges have been the filter of choice for spa pools for many years. The mistake a lot of spa manufacturers make is they demand a large surface area in a small cartridge. The obvious way to do this is manufacture a cartridge that has a large amount of pleats so they get that surface area. This results in the pleats crammed very close together so much so that the dirt and debris will not travel down the full depth of the pleat. This results in only a very small portion of the cartridge that is filtering and premature blockage is inevitable. It has been proved in tests and in the field that there is an optimum surface area on any given size of cartridge where the filtration was at its most efficient. A large spa company in Australia approached Magnum Filters and stated that their 50 square foot cartridges were blocking up very quickly.

AstralPool UK have a wide and varied range of high performance residential filters to suit most applications

This cartridge had 225 pleats on a 150mm diameter cartridge. After doing a series of factory tests with different size cartridges they ended up with the same size cartridge with 185 pleats. This cartridge worked far better and with regular cleaning lasted a lot longer than the previous model.
